An 83rd birthday celebration for Ray at Ray's Candy Store

Ray Alvarez, the hard-working proprietor of Ray's Candy Store, turned 83 last month.



And, as is tradition, some of Ray's friends/regulars brought in entertainment — burlesque dancers Pearls Daily, Lilin Lace, The Maine Attraction, Bettina May and Lickety Split — for a birthday celebration, which took place last night at the shop at 113 Avenue A.

    Has anyone bothered to do a comparison from year to year of Ray's birthday event. For example, there appears to be a correlation between the width of Ray's smile and the length of the tassels of the lady who's shaking it on the counter. Nate Silver are you listening?

    Meanwhile, crickets could be heard chirping at the hostile deli next door, where there were NO CUSTOMERS!!

    They can't compete with Ray and all of the love he gets!!
