Albert Trummer's hospital-themed cocktail lounge Sanatorium now open on Avenue C

The cocktail lounge opened this past weekend on the northeast corner of Avenue C and Second Street.

In a preview of mixologist Albert Trummer's latest establishment, The New York Times notes Sanatorium's clinical theme.

The walls are the kind of green you’d expect in a hospital; there are surgical lights (and crystal chandeliers) and lots of stainless steel, and the drinks incorporate herbal elixirs that Mr. Trummer concocts.

And as Eater noted, "shots are also served in syringes."

Last July, Trummer told Bedford + Bowery that the new place will be "reasonable and cool for the neighborhood." Trummer also told B+B that he "won’t set any drinks, or his bar, on fire with again. At least, not without the proper permits."

According to published reports, FDNY investigators arrested Trummer in 2010 after setting alcohol aflame on the bartop at Apothéke on Doyers Street. He was charged with reckless endangerment and criminal nuisance, both misdemeanors. After the arrest, he told the Times: "My intention was not to hurt anybody. I'm an artist. I'm a mixologoist. I'm a cook. But I'm not a pyrotechnic maniac." He reportedly pleaded not guilty and served two days of community service.

A photo on Sanatorium's Facebook page does show some pyrotechnics... (though it's unclear if this is actually at Sanatorium...)

14 Avenue C was previously home to Adinah's Farm, the market that closed in June 2014.

  1. Oh please. Another bearded tool who presumes to lecture us on what constitutes coolness. Go back to Williamsburg, ya pretentious poser, and take your self-concocted herbal elixirs and your "drinks served in syringes" with you.

  2. "reasonable and cool for the neighborhood." Is it opposite world now on Avenue C?

Themes are okay for a child's birthday party, a holiday related event, or maybe a barb-b-qua in your back yard. Anything permanently "themed" is the definition of no cool.

  4. Looks great I have to check it out the week. Love the theme it makes for a fun place to have a drink. Not much of a shot guy, but think the syringe concept is way cool.

  6. The people were outside the bar smoking and talking loudly at 3 am this past weekend. The bartender was right there and didn't ask them to keep it down. HOO-fuckin-RAY!!!!

  8. These places still don't survive for very long so far east, there just aren't quite enough luxury condos in the area yet. These places market themselves as 'themed' cocktail bars but no one ever really orders the cocktails and they end up vending their PBR's and well drinks, just becoming another faux 'in' place. There are many more examples than are needed in the area. And of course leave it to the total idiots of CB3 to give the go-ahead to this place despite the owner having been charged with multiple counts, and getting convicted in court, for reckless endangerment for operating his previous bar in an openly dangerous manner. Typical development in the neighborhood now, we lose the actually needed Adinah's grocery and deli and get a completely stupid bar for transient partiers.

  9. As someone who has had to take multiple injections on a daily basis for 40 years, I don't find anything funny or entertaining about syringes.

Do the mudslides come in a colostomy bag?

  11. Having places such as these in the neighborhood will surely put the residents and the locals nearby in a sanitarium.

  12. "Shots are also served in syringes." What is this Bourbon Street. I have seen those in New Orleans for over a decade.

  14. I wonder if he can blow the smoke out of his ass, now that would be impressive. I'm sure that all of the enthusiasts would go in for it.

I can imagine residents in opposition trying to explain this story to the SLA as not having a public benefit for the neighborhood.

  17. How much do you have to tip for the bartender to do the human volcano?

The existence of places like this is why I believe Trump is going to be elected. G-d help us.
