I can't say for sure when this happened (recently though!) ... Desi Shack, the quick-serve Indian-Pakistani restaurant on Fourth Avenue between East 13th Street and East 14th Street, has apparently closed... the signage is down, and the phone has been disconnected. There isn't any message about a closure on their social media properties (not that they were up-to-date) .... there's not even a mention of this on Yelp...
Anyway, the Desi Shack is gone... and the storefront now sports Pakistani Kitchen letters...
Perhaps the owners are retooling their concept. The original Desi Shack on Lexington Avenue has also closed. This location opened in July 2014.
Pretty good food, but this is a competitive stretch for quick-serve restaurants with neighbors Liquiteria, Dos Toros, Glaze Teriyaki and Fresh.
They were open on Friday when I walked by and debated going in and grabbing some lunch, but the place was pretty empty in comparison with Dos Toros.
ReplyDeleteI went to Desi Shack once and wanted to like it but it suffered from Chipotle syndrome (raw onions in everything). None of this matters now that Desi Galli is just a block away from me and their food is fantastic.
ReplyDeleteI hope it's another bar, rolled ice cream drop-in center, or bank branch. Or maybe a kiosk that dispenses beer, ice cream, AND cash! #embracechange
ReplyDeleteThe food was good, but, I always got the feeling that it was hard to compete with the solid Dos Toros, serving more familiar Mexican food next door.
ReplyDeleteThe owners wanted to open-up a froyo or cupcake joint or a beer store! but a very bad man interfered and insisted they should open an authentic Indian-Pakistani restaurant.
ReplyDeleteA photo from their website shows the storefront, at one point at least, showing "desi shack" lettering over the brick, which is now gone (as shown in your photo):

BUT, if you take a look at their website, the top reads:
http://www.desishack.com/about/
desi shack
packistani kitchen
So maybe (hopefully!) it is just a remodel
Desi Shack was soooooo delicious-this news is breaking my heart. No more Boca Chica. No more Benny"s. Now no more Desi Shack
ReplyDeleteLove Glaze Teriyaki!
ReplyDeletePLEASE! Not another fucking cupcake bakery or a salad store or better yet, a bank.
