Commercial awning arrives for Alphabet City Deli & Grill on Avenue C

Workers have been renovating the former Loisaida Ave. Deli on Avenue C and Fourth Street. The corner market closed back in January, with some pretty cool ghost signage coming into view.

Yesterday, workers brought in the new awning... for Alphabet City Deli & Grill...

The sign notes the shop will sell ice cream, fresh smoothies, hot & cold sandwiches, hookah accessories, cigars, etc.

While there isn't any mention of selling pancakes, the new sign shows a stack of them (and behind bars? Or a grill?)...

Thanks to @artisanmatters for the photo!

  1. I'm sorry (not really), but that sign is absolutely HIDEOUS. It's like something you'd expect at a truck stop. In Florida!!

Seriously this has now toppled reigning champion Take Me Home Rotisserie for the title of Most Ugly EV Signage.

  2. More important, they will be selling 'Hot&Cold Sandwiches' and 'Hot & Cold Sandwiches' - three types of sandwiches!

  3. What's really annoying is this sign is totally illegal, yet they will probably get away with it. The sign is only legally allowed to have the name of the store and the address.

  4. Anonymous 10:44, That doesn't sound true. There are so many signs with the same information as this one: Open 24 Hours, Lotto, items for sale, etc.

  5. What is "illegal" about this sign? Enlighten us.

  6. They should get rid of the ampersand and use the plus sign (Deli + Grill is trendier and more hip) instead and watch the hipsters and weekend warriors flock here.

Do they have a permit to put up the sign? It's separate from construction permit. The sign hanger needs to be licensed, $500 application fee.
It looks illuminated, do they have an illuminated sign permit? $100/year.
Is the sign encroaching on the residential part of the building? That's illegal.

Not saying it's illegal, but it is if they don't follow the rules.

  8. Hey 5:24pm you said it was illegal at 10:44am like this:

"What's really annoying is this sign is totally illegal."

I have no idea if they have the necessary paperwork, permits, and licenses, or adhered to rules for their sign and I doubt you have one either, so get an idea if it bothers you so much.

    You doubt incorrectly: http://a810-bisweb.nyc.gov/bisweb/bispi00.jsp
You can check the DOB web site and see they don't have a permit for this sign. Of course they don't, since the DOB would never approve this sign, illegal.
    I walked by today:
It extends more than 2' from the facade, illegal.
Parts of the sign are blocking 2 different residential windows, illegal.
It's illuminated (I saw the lights) with no permit, illegal, though not until they turn it on.

  10. To the person who thinks this sign is illegal: You may not have noticed, but the sign in this picture is mounted onto the truck beneath it. Attached to the building, it doesn't even extend one foot, let alone two. Dingus.

  11. Would everyone stop bickering about the bylaws of signage already? The sign is clearly illegal -- it is a crime against GOOD TASTE and EYEBALLS

As I said, I walked by the building yesterday and stood underneath the hung sign. It extends more than 2' from the facade of the building. It has fluorescent lights and lots of structure behind the letters.
Please educate yourself before you start name calling.

'Glad you finally found out if the sign was illegal or not after I called you out for being speculative and inconsistent.

First you said the sign was "totally illegal" when you had no clue it was, then you denied saying that it was illegal, then you finally actually looked up the info for the sign (and spared all of us having to look it up, like I would pssshhhh) after I doubted you had a clue about the sign. So I didn't "doubt wrong", you just didn't have your shit together until I pressed you for it.

Quite incorrect, so get a clue.
I (5:24 and 1:41) am not the same person as 10:44.
I have no idea what that guy is talking about, I've never heard of a sign being limited to name and address.
I made my observations based on NYC published regulations, no idea where 10:44 read that.
