We haven't heard about any plans on changing this section of Second Street from west- to east-driving traffic ... like it is between the Bowery and First Avenue.

Meanwhile, as for now, the Tacos Morelos stand is still facing the same direction...
I drove the wrong way on this block, with an ounce of blow, and the nypd only blasted sirens/ lights to get me to turn around. Of course, that was in the 70s. Nostalgia.

ReplyDeleteTo determine which way makes sense, you'd have to imagine a situation where someone is waiting for a parking space that someone else is leaving. The old way, if you saw someone preparing to leave, you'd situate your car close to the spot, then probably have to back up to let the person out, then pull into the space. The new way, if you see someone preparing to leave, you'd situate your car close to the spot, pull forward when the spot is open, then back into it.
ReplyDeleteIt's the backwards driving that's affected. Backing into the spot causes less havoc on the street than backing down the street to let out a car.

ReplyDeleteIn terms of public safety, this is brilliant.
ReplyDeleteParking rear-in is far safer for everyone than parking front-in, even for non-angled spots. If you park front-in and back out of a spot, your vision is limited and it might not be obvious to other cars, bicyclists, and little kids playing that you are backing out. When you park rear-in and drive forward to get out of the parking spot, your vision is not obscured as you see everything in front of you, and can better react to things that go around you, not to mention you are at the front part of the vehicle that is moving into the street first, so you are more obvious.

I parked there last weekend. The group of hispanic male bums who camp near the taco cart uses the space between parked cars to relieve themselves. Its really gross, there's so many piles of human shit/piss and used tissues between every car. Such a shame because the newly paved and painted road looks so nice otherwise.
