Maybe NSFW!
About 100 people reportedly took part in today's third annual NYC Bodypainting Day ... two double-decker buses drove the participants around the city... and they made a stop on Avenue B and East Third Street ... where EVG reader David took these photos this afternoon...
And the reaction from the brunch bunch? Per David:
"The sidewalk eaters at Root and Bone just laughed and raised glasses. The B&T crowd at Mama’s Bar, however, screamed, ran out with phones ready, and screamed OMG — a lot. I thought the nude folks handled it well!"
... and a few more photos from Tompkins Square Park and Avenue A via Bobby Williams...
... and a few more photos via Derek Berg...
Is that blue guy by the ATM really with the group? It looks like he smeared himself with tempera paint.
ReplyDeleteDid they check out Ray's new digs?
ReplyDeleteI liked it better when you had to fight to express yourself.
ReplyDeleteIt's never the ones you want
ReplyDeleteAnd the idiots at poco puked and moved on and poco closed forever! We can all dream. Hey grieve do a report about Mama's installing an outdoor speaker for their bullshit "sidewalk cafe"
ReplyDeleteThankfully, no; I didn't notice.
ReplyDeleteHaha this ALMOST makes me miss NYC. Almost.
ReplyDeleteSad that folks have so much time to spend on "body freedom"...
ReplyDeleteBut folks can't be bothered to vote...
And folks can't be bothered to know what's happening in Syria or that Kansas has been decimated by the Republicans or know about the treatment of farm workers picking your kale or that the underpaid immigrant worker delivering your food could very well be sharing a 2 bedroom apartment with 7 other people....
Interesting choice of activities for the community garden.
ReplyDeleteI appreciate the artistry on the painting on some of these folks, but aesthetic effect is almost entirely ruined by the banality of Birks, flip-flops, and dirty tennis shoes, and the holding of cell phones, water bottles, and half-eaten pizza slices. And I second the questioning of blue ATM guy, he looks pretty dubious.
ReplyDeleteI'll never really get why people need to do these things en masse, and in public. Not that anyone should hide, more that I do not understand these "oddball" group participation things, be it Santacon or riding the subway without pants or the thankfully now passé flash mob. Being an actual oddball is usually a pretty lonely business by design.
These people are more gross than artistic or art themselves.
ReplyDeleteSorry to be a prude but having your dicks out like that is just repulsive. Why couldn't those libertine posers wear underwear like the ladies are doing?
Is that Officer TUBBS?!?
ReplyDelete@9:21 just because you're a debbie downer 24 hours a day doesn't mean everybody else should be.
ReplyDeleteAs a man myself, aren't I subject to a summon's or an arrest if my dick is out in the open public like this? Some of these men have micro penises. If I was that small (which I am not thankfully) I wouldn't dare show that to the world. Cool paintings though.
ReplyDeleteDo they really have to wear shoes?
ReplyDeleteI also thought if I exposed my penis on the street, I'd be taken into the precinct. In Germany, it is perfectly acceptable to be completely naked in a park or public, whether one is a man or a woman. You can let whatever you want to hang out and no one bats an eye. When I visited Berlin a few years back, I was blown away with how their culture is open and embracing with nudity. It was refreshing and cool.
ReplyDelete@9:21 You forgot nuclear proliferation and about 5,000 other things.
ReplyDeleteAs for all the size freaks here, try walking around the streets naked and then see how big you are. (major shrinkage factor)
Yeah, BVN, the self-proclaimed ruler of Santacon, only wants the beautiful and the young underage from small town middle America and Canada to participate in this, much like his beloved Santacon, so that he can take advantage of them in his futon.

You should check out Saudi Arabia then. Me, I like it better when we win the struggles and can stop struggling.

ReplyDeleteIs it me or do all the men in these photos have small penises? Only in New York, kids. Only in New York.
Water it, it'll grow.

In Japan, full frontal nudity is also allowed on television. I'm not sure of their rate of gun violence as compared to ours, but I bet it's a lot lower.
In NYC—and I believe New York State—it's perfectly legal for a woman to be topless in a public place, although most women choose to cover up. (Also, privately-owned establishments such as restaurants and bars require shoes and shirts to be worn.) If I were a sunbather—which I'm not—I'd definitely sunbathe topless.
It's just fascinating to hear about y'alls penis size and willingness to go nude, truly it is, but maybe we could get back to the actual topic?
ReplyDeleteAlso I find it hilarious that anyone thinks that allowing nudity on television would suddenly make America a less violent country. LOL. We'd just be a nude violent country. USA! USA!
What a fucking joke.
ReplyDeleteHipsters, millenials, old creeps - go away!!!
I hope as many of these pretentious, insufferable jackasses as possible were arrested for indecent exposure.
"As many as possible" is indeed how many were arrested -- which is to say, zero. What the group did was not illegal, it was nudity in the service of artistic expression, and it was done with the blessing and advance knowledge of the city, the Parks Department, and the police. No one was harmed, no one broke the law, and no one was arrested.
ReplyDeleteIt's not Ray's new digs, it's Ray new digs.
ReplyDelete@ 9:21. Syria has been decimated by the Republicans? That's Hillary Clinton's baby, and Barack Obama's red line baby, unless you think they're Republicans ... and I guess they kind or are, so ... yeah, carry on that.
ReplyDeleteBut the 'body freedom' comment is well-taken. It's old news that things like sexual license always go hand in hand with the elimination of more essential freedoms, which is why on one hand it's nice to see a broader acceptance of gay/les/trans, etc. but it's also being done against the backdrop of turning everyone into total serfs.
And when I cash in all my perv chips, I'm going to rebrand myself as a body painting artiste.

ReplyDeleteAt no point does 9:21 say that the Republicans have anything to do with Syria.
Who do we get to blame for the failure of the public education system?
12:01 - Blame the Republicans, smarty.
ReplyDeleteAmazing artwork on a rolled up canvas.
ReplyDeleteGreat artwork on a rolled up canvas. It seems like one commenter never heard of the use of nude models in art before. That's sad.
ReplyDeleteSince I was one of those 100 nude painted people, I would like to set the record straight on a couple of points. When cmarrtyy asks "Do they have to wear shoes?", I can only answer that a person would have to be crazy to walk around New York City all afternoon with no shoes. A couple of people commented on the models wearing underwear. At Bodypainting Day, no clothing was allowed. Many people wore underwear up until the point where the genital area got painted, but after that, when we toured the city, no underwear was worn by any of us. And to the person who complained about photos of us eating and drinking, those were candid shots, taken of the models just being people, which is really one of the main points of the whole affair.
ReplyDeleteCreate Not Hate
ReplyDelete12:07, I didn't "complain" about your crowd eating or drinking, just noted that any beauty to be found in the body painting is somewhat negated by the rather pedestrian act of publicly chomping on pizza. Also, if the ladies of Wigstock can clomp around in 6+-inch vinyl platforms all day, I imagine that you all can find more attractive footwear to go with your ~artistic expression~ than worn-out pairs of dirty Tevas. Consider this not a complaint, but some constructive criticism. You're welcome.
