Back in June, Gov. Cuomo and the NY Legislature agreed to reform the state's Alcohol Beverage Control Law that reportedly dated back some 80 years.
Soooooo bars and restaurants in the city will be able to start serving drinks at 10 a.m. on Sundays instead of noon.
There was some question at the time when this go into effect.
The answer (H/T Grub Street!): This weekend.
Gov. Cuomo on Wednesday signed the so-called "Brunch Bill" legislation.
Now if Cuomo will only do something about Section 10-114 of the New York City Administrative Code for the benefit of puppeteers citywide.
Previously on EV Grieve:
Report: Cuomo clears way for brunch drinking to start at 10 a.m. on Sundays (35 comments)
What could possibly go wrong?
ReplyDeleteI think it's funny that people will assume that this will make things drunkier (not a word, i know) on Sundays.
ReplyDeleteDo you think that anyone going to a boozy brunch is up early enough to start at 10am?
This will be the primetime for people that want to have brunch with a mimosa or two, but not get smashed on a Sunday.
NBD.
WOOT!
ReplyDeleteBrunch culture is ruining new york. Or has ruined***
ReplyDeleteIf a hotel can serve a guest a bloody at breakfast why not a restaurant? The real problem is bottomless for 1.5 - 2 hours encouraging binge drinking. No one needs that, resto's or the patrons. Ban it. Charge a la carte only. And the brunch streets are cleaned up.
So now I can get completely blasted on a summer morning, but can't get access to the medical marijuana that I'm legally entitled to. Excellent. Love the NYS gov't.
ReplyDeleteNow I don't have to wait for two hours after church gets out.
ReplyDeleteTailgating comes to the EV.
ReplyDeleteOf course more people are going to get drunk. More alcohol serving hours times more people drinking alcohol equals more drunk people. Do the math.
ReplyDeleteIn a free society, none of this would not be the government's business. As Mr. Lysander Spooner put it, "legislation is an absurdity, a usurpation, and a crime." Get the government out of restaurants.
ReplyDeleteOh wait, in a free society there is no gubment. Sorry, fellow anarchists for a momentary lapse into Stockholm Syndrome.

@cnarrtyy - Thats a very intereseting point and makes the timing of this very telling, the first NFL game seems to be tonight, so I expect we begin to see early Sunday football drinking.
ReplyDeleteOh goody, because it's not like there's enough time for people to drink already. God forbid they have to go for two hours without alcohol, the lushes.
ReplyDeleteCall the waaaah-mbulance.
ReplyDeleteTime (as in 10:00 AM) will tell. My hope is that this just means drunk brunchers will be passed out by the time I go out for LUNCH.
ReplyDeleteI need to drink earlier because this world is getting worse and no pot does not kill the pain, and besides, I like the way my digested brunch looks on the sidewalk!
ReplyDeleteNext on Gov. Cuomo's agenda: replace tap water with gin.
ReplyDelete...and on a related note...Sunday afternoon amateur hour, featuring midday puking will commence two hours early as well.
ReplyDeleteDreams do come true
