A $19,500 rental on Avenue A; 'Drama, drama everywhere'

There's a new listing for an apartment in 12 Avenue A (in the building that houses Kelly's Sports Bargo Sabres!).

Here's the dramatic pitch via Douglas Elliman:

LIVE/WORK
Formerly a theatre, this 4 bedroom 4.5 bathroom home marries modernist chic with NYC edge and authenticity.

Uber renovated to pristine perfection. Sparkling Viking chef kitchen and stunning new baths, this dreamspace is totally turnkey.

Drama, drama everywhere. Soaring loft ceiling heights on 2 floors, outfitted with a state of the art commercial lighting system, this loft is the very definition of Downtown Cool.

An entertainers dream come true — it's no surprise that it hosted many, many Hollywood fetes.

Asking rent: $19,500/month.

The price has gone up since we last looked at this vacancy in 2011, when the monthly ask was a mere $12,000. (And there wasn't any mention of the unit's previous Hollywood fetes.)

You can find more interior photos here.

  1. Yep, that buys you a lot of drama...

  2. That copy was written by the former Trump campaign PR person no doubt.

  3. Is it dumb to ask what is a .5 bathroom?

and save the drama for your mama.

    1. .5 usually means just a toilet and sink. No tub or shower.

  4. "NYC edge and authenticity"? How is anything in that overly-decorated swankfest even remotely edgy? And as far as authenticity, yeah, the first thing I think of when I crave authentic is a "sparkling Viking chef kitchen". Or is the graffiti- and sticker-laden front door supposed to bestow that yearned-for "Downtown Cool" upon the undoubtedly clueless occupants of this waste of space?

  6. You would think that for almost $20K a month you could find a better block to live on. It is sort of amazing how much money people are spending for condos and rentals just to live in the "cool" part of town.

  7. Wait a second....Kelly's is a Sabres bar??

  8. $20k/month to listen to 24/7 EMS sirens.

  9. That much rent, and you're still living above a bar.

  10. About that "entertainers dream come true"... the other residents of the building do not appreciate noise late at night, and previous parties have drawn multiple noise complaints.

  11. I walk by this building all the time and never woulda guessed this sort of space was on the inside, from its outside appearance.

For some reason, upon reading this and viewing the photos, I was immediately reminded of the Dutch House in 1990's Where The Heart Is where Dabney Coleman's privileged brood get dumped and begin haphazardly artist-gentrifying the old-school building. Here, all the cheesy modern styles are competing with each other within the limitations of a 1920's structure made for a small theatre.

Probably costs up the ass to heat that joint during the winter. And when you have that much open air interior and living room real estate, you kinda HAVE to throw parties. It'd be a waste of money to not show it off and you'd have to have money to burn to want to be a loner in that space for that much money.
