Yesterday we noted that the pretzel-centric bar-restaurant had not been open lately at 29 Avenue B between Second Street and Third Street. The folks at Sigmund's shared a message on their social media accounts last night noting the closure.
The Urbanspace Vanderbilt location lives on in Midtown. And as noted, the popular pretzels are on the menu of several restaurants in the city and sold via carts at various locations and events.
As for Avenue B, perhaps this concept was too adult for the block... they'd need 186 giant TVs and kegs of free brunch mimosas to help put a dent in the nearby crowds.
I never stepped into this place, on the slim chance I want a pretzel I would buy on from a street cart. I waiting for the next wave in restaurant concepts, I would suggest a condiment cafe where you guessed it, you sample a variety of ketchups, mustards and for the daring, chutney. Remember you heard it here first.
ReplyDeleteI often dropped by with my daughter after school in Sigmund's early days. Lina, the founder, and her staff were always nice and I wish them well. I haven't been there in a long time as this location seemed to transition to being more like a pretzel-themed bar.

I loved this place. Street pretzels are gross. They're just salty dough. And the vendors act like their mustard is caviar.

ReplyDeleteIve lived in this hood since the 80's and have seen it change drastically. When Sigmund's first opened it was a great neighborhood cafe that was even open for breakfast (they had really good coffee). I guess Lina felt she had to compete with the current demographic of the neighborhood (woohoo girls, douche pants and frats) and change from a cafe to more late night bar. Sad that a bar/pretzel shop is now considered too sophisticated for this area! I wish them well...
ReplyDeleteI loved this place for pretzels and beer on a saturday night date night with my daughter ..Sad news. If living in the hood for 24 years and liking homemade pretzels makes someone a hipster so be it .
ReplyDeleteYou've been "living in the hood for 24 years" so since 1992 waaayyyyyy before the hipsters came along and you're badmouthing the street pretzels makes you worse than the hipsters. At least they don't have a clue, you do. Shame on you. Btw I didn't badmouth Sigmund's, just snobs like you who have his/her nose up to street pretzels. I bet you like those $5-6 hotdogs from that new hotdog stand, too.
ReplyDeleteI used to come to this place for drinks, for food, and for pretzels... They always played great music and the bartenders were super nice. Very sad to learn they're gone!
