EVG contributor Derek Berg reports that someone "dumped" this dog in the small dog run this morning ... Derek's photos are from around 9:30.
Residents called Social Tees on Fifth Street, and someone was there within 10 minutes. Social Tees is taking the dog to the vet for chip information and a check up. Derek guesses that the dog is between 1 and 2 years old...

Thank you Social Tees. You should put some info up so those people may get some donations for doing this important work. It's donation season.
ReplyDeleteThey are a wonderful organization. Folks, if you have some spare change, they are donation-worthy. They'll also take cans of foods, and unused toys and bedding.
DeleteOh my God, who does this?!? I hope they burn for Eternity, the monster(s)! Bolt, I hope that as soon as you are recovered you find your forever home, but with a sweet face like that, I don't think it will be a problem. Thank you, Social Tees and all others responsible for helping this little baby.

ReplyDeleteAwww poor little guy. People leave unwanted dogs in the run fairly often knowing eventually someone will notice it is alone and it's all dog lovers there of course.
ReplyDeleteLet's look at this from another angle, the person(s) that had this dog obviously were not able to properly care for him so they actually did a kind thing by leaving him the smaller dog run where was found probably before much time had passed. The dog run seems to always have dog lovers with their pets and a happy ending for this guy.
ReplyDeleteAre you serious? There's a 24 hour city shelter where you can dump your dog, not the dog run in the rain. It's not as bad as letting the dog loose in the street but very traumatic for the dog regardless.
DeleteAt Animal Care and Control, they do euthanize animals, so Anonymous at 1:21 has a good point that the dog lover would be more apt to get the dog to a non-kill shelter, foster, etc.
Delete@RJJNY Done!
ReplyDelete"Let's look at this from another angle,"
ReplyDeleteThere is no other angle. There are plenty of options the lazy scumbag coward owner could have explored in rehoming this poor puppy. Leaving the little guy in the middle of the city, in the rain, and turning his/her back on the scared animal to just make it someone else's problem is a really shitty thing to do. Screw them and in no way should that behavior be defended and it's very odd that you would make excuses for them unless you have some skin in the game.
Thank you to Social Tees. I am going to look up Social Tees online and make a donation.

ReplyDelete1:21pm is defending someone for abandoning a dog.
ReplyDeleteFuck you 1:21pm.
Anon 1:46pm. You don't have a clue about the dogs former owner or their circumstances. You assume the owner is a "lazy scumbag coward". You don't know that. Maybe the person is homeless/mentally ill and going to a shelter- no pets allowed. If the former owner was rescued him/herself this might have been the best available option for the pet. At least the dog was left somewhere where it would be taken care of and eventually adopted. Maybe the owner was an elderly person who had issues caring for a dog and has passed away. There are lots of possibilities. If you are homeless/unemployed/mentally ill and unable to care for yourself and your dog leaving it in TSP is one of best options.
ReplyDeleteYou make a good point. A friend and I rescued a dog tied up by the senior housing on 5th Street. We later found out the owner was an addict who could no longer take care of her dog and wanted to get it away from a boyfriend. And Social Tees hooked us up with foster care and help. My friend ending up adopting the dog.
DeleteAnother friend of mine found and kept a dog tied up and abandoned in Central Park. My guess is some of these folks can no longer take care of their dogs and they are too ashamed to surrender it to the ASPCA, etc.
The point is, if you see an abandoned dog, contact Social Tees or a reputable shelter for assistance.
@3:32 PM
ReplyDeleteThank you, thank you and thank you for telling these judgmental haters to not condemn others unless you have all the facts. You bring up many logical scenarios that could be the reason for leaving this dog at a place where it would find someone to care for it. But some people have only sympathy for this little dog and are ready to linch the person or persons that thought this was a better solution than bringing him to the dog pound where he might be euthanized in a month or two.
@ Anon 3:32
ReplyDeleteYou must know that internet comment sections are not the place for a nuanced point. I agree, its possible this was a heart wrenching decision, by someone without another option.
Pretty sure I saw Eric Trump throw the dog from a moving limo earlier this morning.
ReplyDeleteThis is a mixed bag of what nots and and who knows. None of us will understand the answer. It is a very shitty thing to do indeed. It sucks actually. But there are so many kind hearted people who happen to love dogs, who will give this charming and beautiful dog a home. We're a big city. Someone will step up and adopt this dog. I am just glad someone noticed and did something. Poor little thing :(
ReplyDeletePost a photo after the grooming.
ReplyDeleteThanks for donation link, RJJNY. Sent them 20 bucks. I can't have a dog but I love Social Tee's.
ReplyDeleteSad to proud in a heartbeat -so heartbreaking someone would abandon but so uplifting that rescue came so quickly - -and with Social Tees I know will have a terrific outcome - Robert introduced us to our pup years ago when he was hours from euthanasia and it was a perfect match :)
ReplyDeleteStop making excuses for irresponsible and negligent people. You would know in advance, if
ReplyDeleteyou cannot take care of your pet anymore. If that happens, act responsibly and make the proper arrangements. That means not leaving your pet out in the rain and hoping that someone will notice the animal. Would you do that to your child? No.....so the same applies here. Treat your pet like the member of your family. Oh.....here's a hint, you cannot afford a pet...don't fucking adopt one!!!
So you're saying you know the exact circumstance that resulted in this situation then?
DeleteIt's very, very common in places like Puerto Rico and Dominican Republic to just turn unwanted dogs loose on the street with the attitude that "Someone will want him." Sometimes I feel like I'm the only person who ever read the children's book "If Everybody Did" when I was a kid, or at least took it to heart.
ReplyDeleteAbandoning the dog in the dog run is kinder—or shall we say, less unkind—than dumping him in Times Square or giving him to a random person on the street.
Well said, Scuba Diva.
DeleteThere are a number of non-kill shelters in NYC, not every unwanted animal has to end up euthanized at CACC. Humane Society, Bide-a-Wee, Animal Haven - hell, I saw a guy walk into a Petco once with a cat he had found in a taped-up box on the street, and they took it from him right then and there to work on getting it adopted. And seriously, whoever did this waits for the most miserable day of the season to leave this little critter alone, cold, wet, and afraid? Sorry, but that is simply pathetic.
ReplyDeleteDear EV Grieve,
ReplyDeletePlease keep us updated on this story.
Thanks!
When emotions dominate reason there will never be a solution to a problem. I understand that dogs and cats depend on humans for food and safety and people LOVE them. I also know there are people that should not have pets but sometimes those very people don't know this until it's too late and it is the pet that suffers. I also know that people don't alway have perfect judgment when it comes to big decisions. The person that left this dog in the dog run did what they thought would solve the problem. No it was not the best day to do so (raining) which makes me think that person may not have been operating at full mental strength. Which also makes me think that person was way over their heads with taking care of this guy. I can only read this as someone in crisis made the best choice that they were able to. If any of you trashing this person had first hand experience with people with mental illness you might be less judgmental and vicious.
ReplyDeleteWhoever "dropped off" this dog should be dropped off a cliff.
ReplyDeleteI will not defend anyone that abandons a dog or cat - but I will say that this action is now a blessing for this pup. He will now find a loving home with regular kisses and grooming. Lucky boy!
