Worrying about Healthfully

Several EVG readers have expressed concern in recent weeks over the longterm health of Healthfully Organic Market, 98 E. Fourth St. between First Avenue and Second Avenue.

Per one reader: "The shelves are looking sparse ... and they seem to be posting their hours weekly."

As of this week, the shop has been closed during posted business hours. There's no word for patrons about a temporary closure on the door or elsewhere. (Healthfully's Facebook page has not been updated since 2012.)

And yesterday, a reader noted that there's a 40 percent off everything inventory sale going on...

  1. I noted this over the summer and asked the owner about it. He told me he was completely rehauling his inventory, that he'd gone into a bodega and realized they were selling many of the same products he was, so he was looking for things you wouldn't be able to find anywhere else. But the fact that it's still going on several months later is worrying.

  3. According to the cashier, they're closing sometime next week. Shelves are mostly empty, but what remains is still 40% off. Stocked up on some Van Leeuwen dairy-free pints (which are excellent but so pricey) and some chocolate bars. Quite a bit of frozen goods remain, as well as boxes of tea and vitamins. Will miss the convenience of this place (i live on the block) but have been wondering for years how they remain in business given their high priced, small selection inventory and the aisles that are always devoid of customers .... guess the time has finally come.

  4. The closing of the health club in the same building really hurt their business. Two of the original owners sold their stakes in the business last year. The present owner had a hard time covering costs when the juice and smoothie business from the health club vanished.

    1. Seems to be that he told people many different stories. It was the landlord, the gym closing. I know for a fact that he didn't pay his rent for months and lost many loyal customers due to many different excuses.

  5. Spoke to them a bunch of times about this. From what I know their lease was up and they were waiting to see if they could agree with the owners on a new one. Apparently that's not happening.
