Signs are up at 185 Avenue C near 12th Street for a new restaurant called Malcriada.
Per its Facebook page, Malcriada is a "Latino Gastropub that will make your taste buds go wild." Their menu posted online shows a variety of quesadillas, tacos, burritos, etc. (Find the menu here.)
The website notes that Malcriada will have its soft opening on Super Bowl Sunday — Feb. 5.
The previous venture here, Kaz, closed after nearly seven months back in December. Before that, Cafecito operated for 14 years. The Cuban-specialty restaurant closed at the end of January 2016.
Not good that they tie their opening to Super Bowl Whatever. Is this a pitch to the Bro Crowd? because the menu doesn't speak to the neighborhood. (High-priced cocktails and generic Mexican food.)

ReplyDeleteThis is another loud sports bar for the neighborhood which is not welcome. Being coy about your plans may work on some but we are all too familiar with the formula of bait and switch your business model. I don't recall this place needing CB3 approval, what's going on here?

ReplyDeleteLet's see, so Sandwicheris is going to "make my eyes pop," while this place is going to "make my taste buds go wild"? Neither prospect find I appealing; my body parts are fine the way they are, so methinks I will take a pass on both. Less wear and tear on the old corpus, which gets enough abuse every day when I participate in the "taking the subway to work" marathon.
ReplyDeleteKaz, the former, which pitched itself as a restaurant -- albeit via Greenpoint Polish -- hardly anyone ate the food, and it eventually degenerated into a multi-screen sports bar with a bad mosquito problem. The liquor license was already in place, I believe, since I sampled their local Polish vodkas.

Well, there seem to be several vegetarian dishes, after looking more carefully.

ReplyDeleteCB3 turned down the Kaz request for a full liquor lucena due to the applicant's total lack of operating experience and vague plans. They must have gotten it from the SLA over the CB recommendation (which is only advisory).
ReplyDeleteI think what's more distasteful than everything having meat—except the salad—is that everything on the menu comes with queso blanco.
