Pourt, a cafe and workspace, opened this past Friday at 35 Cooper Square at Sixth Street (in one of the retail spaces in the base of the Marymount Manhattan College dormitory).

For now, in this soft-open mode, only the cafe portion of the operation is up and running. They are serving Intelligentsia coffee and tea as well as offerings from Tompkins Square Bagels and Liquiteria, among others. (You can find the other vendors here.) They were also approved for a beer-wine license last summer.
There will also be a workspace for freelancers, students... and anyone else. The space has fiber-optic Internet connection and access to color printers. According to the Pourt website, a desk space (with a comfortable-looking chair) is $7 an hour, and an extra $2.99 gets you unlimited coffee, espresso or tea drinks. I've been wondering when a cafe would come to the east village with this business model. Seems long overdue.
ReplyDeleteWhat ever happened to libraries? Why pay $7-10 an hour when you can sit for hours at the Bean or Starbucks with a $3 cup of coffee. $25 an hour for a conference room is not bad, however.

ReplyDeleteIt's sterile. I passed it yesterday, looked in and decided to move on. Uninviting. Uncomfortable. It's one of the hallmarks of modern design... It's pretty but don't touch. Don't settle in. You can see it more clearly at the Astor ReDo. Space but no real comfort. Slabs but very few seats. Stop but don't rest. There's no comfort. Just keep moving. We're all vagrants in a world of modern design.
ReplyDeleteIt's not a bad idea, especially if you're a freelancer or someone who needs a temporary work space. Much better than taking up space all day in a crowded Starbucks. It's also nice to be able to rent a professional room for a meeting.

ReplyDeleteAh, but the Starbucks on Broadway and 9th Street (oh memories of Silver Spurs) has comfortable chairs and tables. I've noticed people setting up their tablets just after they open at about 7 AM.
ReplyDeleteThis Starbucks actually has China coffee cups if you ask for them! You can enjoy your beverage without paper cups!
DeleteUnlimited espresso? I can go there in the morning, have my five espressos in an hour, and I'm good for the day!
