An EVG reader shared these photos from Astor Place this morning... where a crew and cast were filming a commercial for the Tribeca Film Festival...



There were rumors that this was a new, quick-serve food concept...

    When I walked past this morning I thought that they all had virtual reality headsets on and were having fun bumping into one another in a virtual reality world.

    I have attended the Tribeca Film Festival every year, and almost without fail the foreign films, especially the ones fom Asia. are much better than the domestic films, which are basically a collection of all the movies that couldn't get into any other film festival, and some of them have been pretty awful. Tribeca says they have reduced the number of films by 20% this year to improve the overall quality, but year in and year out these are mostly films that disappear immediately after the festival is over. Evening tickets are $24 a pop with the service charges, and you usually can't even see a trailer before the movie to know if it's worthwhile. Getting rush tickets is hit or miss, and they treat you like cattle in those holding pens. In this age of streaming unlimited movies they need to get better films to justify the price. They also double the price of popcorn, so it's amost cheaper to fly out to Sundance if you plan to see a lot of movies. And the skiing is better out there too. This year I bought one ticket so far, that's all I can tolerate anymore, but if they would show movies about all the East Village landlords going to jail then I'm in.

    re: domestic films

    I think that all the indie movies go straight to PBS. There are these boring terrible and below amateurish films that broadcast after the classic movie of the week on saturdays and they look like they were film the week before and on iphones.

    Giovanni, if you know you are being ripped off by Deniro and Co then why bother going? Fuck him, if enough people stop racing to go his media/real-estate empire will simply dry up.

    @3:04PM You are right, I should stop going and almost have, but every year they promise things will be better and they never fail to disappoint. It's an event where all the outside activities -- like the Tribeca Talks seminars and other events -- are more fun than the movies. I guess I need a support group like Film Festival Anonymous to break the habit.

    @JQ LLC I've seen those awful movies on PBS, it's almost like the filler movies on Netflix. I wonder how many of these indie films are made by those kids who go to the NY Film Academy and make those silly looking 16MM skits in Union Square Park. My guess is none.

    Tribeca Film Festival is just symptomatic of what's going on in the arts in New York. Nothing. Artists can't afford to live here. Last time I went to the festival. - posers, name-dropers and baaaaad films.
