Shake Shack announces itself at the Death Star

As previously reported, Danny Meyer’s fast-growing burger chain is opening a 3,000-square-foot outpost in/at 51 Astor Place/IBM Watson Building/the Death Star.

On Friday, the Shake branding arrived here at Third Avenue at Ninth Street... (this location will also serve beer and wine...)

... and they are ready to Shake, rattle... and hire...

  1. Oh brother. The deluge of BS begins. What is happening to this (our) neighborhood, let alone the rest of the city? It has become a playground of chain restaurants, bro bars, Duane Reade's, and Starbucks. Sad state of affairs.

  2. The big black glass corporate box is now complete.

  3. Shake Shack AND Martina - Danny Meyer must really see $$$$$$ in this area.

  4. SS lines are just baffling. SS burgers good but lots of other good burgers around. (Fries are frozen I believe.)

Also interesting...have seen SS in a few other cities. Never a line. Never crowded.

So in NYC, tourists stand on line for SS. But at home in Florida or wherever, don't even bother to go to local SS?

Freezing fries prior to cooking is actually a preparation technique. It produces a particular type of fry.

  6. I don't eat meat so... But some good news from the DeathStar... Did anyone notice the planters installed on the 4th Ave side. Nice touch

  7. I like their burgers in theory but lately their quality control has been shoddy and I am talking about at the motherfuckin flagship location. Burgers slapped together, not made with pride, glacially slow service etc. It's not nearly enough to have chef-concocted burgers with high falutin ingredients. Danny Meyer you precious little twerp. To make it all work the people who make and serve the food need to give a shit. Pretty crucial link in the whole chain actually.

  8. 70s and Columbys, 35th and Broad, 23rd and Broad, 8th and Broad (sorta), Danny Meyer just made a diagonal line of his chain through Manhattan. For tourists mostly....

  9. @cmartyy Those planters look good, they could have just repaved the old square, put in a bunch planters to block the old street and called it a day, but instead we had to wait years for this "renovation" only to have it taken over last weekend for Citibank's miniature Golf Course and Italian Ice giveaway.

As for Shake Shack, they do have a portobello burger and the fries are good, but the shakes are just average and the prices are high for everyday consumption. These are tourist destinations so that's why the ones outside of NY don't seem to be as busy. Superiority Burger is much better in my opinion, the burnt brocolli salad is great, their veggie burger is a dollar cheaper, and the lines are usually not as long.

  10. Giovanni,

So right about Superiority Burger. The best. And so is the burnt salad.

  11. Fear of ShackStack is the path to the dark side. It leads to anger; anger leads to hate; hate leads to sufferrrrring.

These aren't the burgers you're looking for.

So this is how liberty dies. With thunderous ShackSauce.

Here all Summer. Try the Shack-cago Dog.

  12. Danny is going to learn the hard way about his flagship fast food chain. It doesn't matter if it's artisan bullshit, oversaturation will kill his businesses if he continues to charge upscale prices for friggin burgers and shakes. Even the most gullible consumer will wake up and see it's not worth 20 bucks for it. This whole foodie zeitgeist is going to end one day, and from the looks of it sooner than he and his peers thinks. They are not McDonalds or even Burger King.

There is also one on 40th and 3rd ave. Big tourist buses stop a block away.

  13. @8:47pm: You're missing the point about the Shake Shack at 40th & 3rd Ave - it's not "tourist buses ... a block away" that are their bread-and-butter (so to speak) but rather it's the people waiting for the HAMPTONS JITNEY buses that load DIRECTLY in front of that Shake Shack (on the 40th St. side). And don't forget all the workers in the office towers upstairs, across the street, and across 3rd Ave., too!

The Shake Shack permits ought to be issued by the US Mint, since those Shacks are pretty much minting money left & right.

  14. I have now decided that Deathstar is a nice building afterall, just in the wrong part of the city. Should be in midtown.

I agree with what you are saying unfortunately there appears to be no end to the influx of tourists invading our city each day. They know everything is overpriced and get to go home with a shopping list of experiences fully checked off. SS won't start losing money until the next must have hyped foodie item arrives which could be any day now.....

Tourist buses go there too. The Jitney stops at 44th st.

And whoever thought that would work was stupid. Believe it or not, that shack on 4oth, hardly busy. This is also happening to Chick Filet in Midtown west too, they opened up another one and there are no lines on the sidewalk around the corner. This is actually happening.

  17. Gold leader this is Red leader, get set up to start your attack run!!! We're going to cut across the axis and try to draw their fire!!!! And watch for enemy fighters!!!

  18. @JQ: I *know* for sure that the Hamptons Jitney buses load directly on 40th St. immediately west of 3rd Ave. (right outside that Shake Shack) b/c I walk past there all the time, and I'm NOT hallucinating the Hamptons Jitneys nor the lines of people waiting to board them!

The Jitneys may *also* be on 44th St; I don't walk near that location routinely, so I wouldn't know about that.

  19. And of course this Shake Shack has to serve beer & wine, b/c otherwise they're just a very overpriced Mickey D's, and the bro's won't "dine" there! Gotta market to the bro's.

  20. Five Guys is better @!@

I didn't doubt you. I seen the Jitney there, no need for *star quotes*.

Five Guys is actually good, though very very pricey, but a little less than shook shack. The fries are super greasy though.

  22. I wish the lines weren't so insane, but the burgers are actually really good.

It's always amusing when people want to turn away nice things just because people might want them. Seems like a winning strategy for life.

  23. "Even the most gullible consumer will wake up and see it's not worth 20 bucks for it. " Huh? A Shackburger + fries + shake comes to about $14 (+ tax). Hardly expensive as NYC burger meal prices go, unless you're talking Mickey D.
