Alex at Flaming Pablum shares the news that Second Hand Rose, the collectible record shop on 12th and Broadway, has closed.
The place opened on 14th Street and Sixth Avenue in 1977 ... moving to a small storefront across the street from the Strand in 2000.

I always hate to see record shops close... though there wasn't much immediate lost love for Rose. As Alex wrote, "I was never a fan of the place — disorganized, dusty, strangely overpriced and pointedly surly."
And they didn't really like sick people shopping in the store...

This store sucked. It was impossible to browse through and didn't carry cds. The store manager was a jerk too.

I first shopped at the 6th ave location back in the early 80s and then at there current location fairly recently. i found a copy of Remington Electric Razor featuring Frank Zappa and Linda Ronstadt (Actually a second copy since my girlfriend was into Ronstadt and me Zappa!) I found them to be a bit pricey but the man behind the register was fair. His woman, who I believed managed or owned the place seemed like she didn't want to be there.
ReplyDeleteTotally agree, the place was cramped, waaaay overpriced and the guy was a jerkoff. No loss. Now, if A-1 closed, that would be a total loss and would suck!
ReplyDeleteAre we sure about this? There were signs up that said remodeling before the the boards went up. Or was that the owner spinning his own demise?

it was a wonder that this place survived at all. it is not unusual to have surly folks running bookstores or record stores (something that comes with the territory from dealing with the constant stream of people browsing and dont spend money?) but the stock at this place and the crazy prices for those crummy records was weak to say the least...
ReplyDeleteThis place always had great inventory but it was always, always priced waaaay off the charts. It only took one or two visits to make clear that this would not be a store that I would be going to. Needless to say I never bought anything there. As far as the observations about the staff that others have already posted...I agree.

ReplyDeleteI am from Holland. I visited NYC five times. Each time I strolled up Broadway, I stopped by Second Hand Rose. I loved the place. The second time, girl remembered me and what I bought even though there was more than a year between my visits... I found that an unexpected pleasure. The records were expensive and tricky to browse, but they helped me find some fantastic records. CTI-stuff, George Benson's "I want you"... Patrice Rushen's 'The hump'... The last time I visited was four years ago, the girl told me they would probably close shop soon. Such a loss.
