Opossum drama in Tompkins Square Park
Parkgoers spotted an opossum this morning ... near the entrance on Seventh Street at Avenue B... unfortunately, the critter had been entangled in a plastic shopping bag...
At least one bystander attempted to remove the bag... but the opossum raced back up the tree as the person approached...
After nearly 30 minutes, EVG correspondent Steven, who shared these photos, said that the opossum was eventually able to free itself from the bag.
P.S.
Bonus photo of an opossum yawning...

Yawning, or preparing to tear mercilessly into Steven's jugular. But I'm sure it's yawning.
ReplyDeleteOpossums go to defenses are hissing and then playing dead, so yes, the opossum is yawning. I have spent quite a bit of time with opossums, wild and domesticated, they are the gentlest creatures that I have ever encountered.
DeleteSorry, but they are the ugliest animals around. Like giant rats with raggedy fur.
ReplyDeleteMan, this made my day.
ReplyDeleteWhere did it come from?
ReplyDeleteawww, so cute. maybe we can name him steve, dont you think? i hope to see our newly member 'steve' in the park pretty soon!! anyways, a very nice story indeed.
ReplyDeleteWow! I love how nature is taking over the park.
ReplyDeleteThe perfect urban animal -- big mouth, lots of teeth and a black/white/neutral wardrobe.
ReplyDeleteIt made my day too.
That little guy must have a really good dentist.
ReplyDeleteAwww ! how super sweet !
ReplyDeleteGreat that more nature is coming to the park -
wonder where or how he got here.
Poor booger probably was probably on a truck!! They get into garbage trucks looking for food and sometimes wind up as reluctant hitchhikers!' Poor little guy saw the only thing that looked like woods, the park!!

ReplyDeleteHmm.Possum stew...Yum
If you love animals and want to see more of them, stop using rat poison!!!
ReplyDeletepossums are gross, but less aggressive and more fearful of humans than raccoons. I think these critters belong in the woods. My theory is that all these yahoos that came here from Wisconsin and Ohio led em' here.
ReplyDeleteRudolph the red nosed opposum
ReplyDeleteOpossums aren't gross.
ReplyDeletePossums are the most gentle, sweet "wild" animals you'll ever encounter. They are here to help us.
