East Village Thai fans were saddened to learn that the small restaurant on Seventh Street between Second Avenue and Cooper Square closed after service on Sunday.
The restaurant's owners first made the announcement on Facebook on Saturday before their last day...
EVG reader Mackenzie, who first brought this to my attention, ate there last Wednesday. The owners made no mention of the impending closure.
Back in 2012, the Daily News said that EVT served some of the best Pad Thai in the city.
This was my favorite Thai restaurant. I always ordered the shrimp rolls and Panang curry. And I loved how it was near my flat.

This is a travesty. My husband would seriously fund them to reopen, we're devastated.

ReplyDelete"Saddened" doesn't even begin to describe. I feel less complete now. Some of my favorite food in the world, and one of my favorite THINGS about this whole city. These people can really cook. There are many Thai eateries in the city but this one's irreplaceable.
ReplyDeleteTo all you people reading this who are surprised to hear that EVT was the best Thai food in the neighborhood, you missed out. You weren't in on this particular cool secret.
Oh no! That sucks. I live on 7th street and have been a loyal customer for years. I wish they would have let others know they were closing so we could have had one last meal. While from the outside it looked like a hole the wall, it really was some of the best Thai I've ever had. The staff were humble and hard working too. So many closings this year thus far. What is happening to our city? :(
ReplyDeleteThis restaurant was once very good for many years, I started going there in 2006, and it was good maybe up until 2015, then some of the regular workers (a really pleasant woman with long dark hair, and perhaps her husband or brother), went back to Thailand.
ReplyDeleteThe food went progressively downhill, even though apparently the same chefs stayed on, two women, one quite old, and one middle aged.
I reflected on this and think they must have cut costs due to rising rents. I noticed the quality of the chicken in particular went down, among other things.
I totally agree. I was sad the quality of food did go down thru the years but to be completely gone was devastating. Too many hood memories gone...
Delete12:44: Your comment helps explain why EV Thai gets a lot of love, but when I went there for the first time in 2016 or '17 it didn't even get to average. The curry we tried definitely did not taste made from scratch.
