At the Tompkins Square Park Halloween Dog Parade — East River amphitheater edition

The 28th annual Tompkins Square Park Halloween Dog Parade took place yesterday afternoon at a new venue — the East River Park amphitheater. (You can read this post for more about how the parade was nearly canceled.)

Hundreds of dogs and their owners turned out in the most spacious location featuring ESPN's Katie Nolan as the host...

EVG contributor Stacie Joy was there to capture the competition, featuring dogs dressed as dinosaurs, hot dogs, lottery winners, toast, the Pope .. well, see for yourself...

... and, as always, there were non-canine interlopers...

... and the winners (there's a video here with more on them)...

  1. great turn out, great job finding an alternative location and sponsor, great costumes, great times!

This is one of the few chances where everyone leaves happy. A very cool tradition/event is kept alive, and the EVGrumps can be happy that the parade now has zero impact on the neighborhood. win/win/win/win/cute dogs

  2. As one of those "EVGrumps" who was mortified by the last year's TSP mess, I actually went to this year's parade and had a delightful time. However I decided to leave after the 191 contestant hit the stage and the line of costumed owners and dogs extended into the horizon.

  3. I'm not a grump, particularly, but I do think that when events like this get to the point of being televised, they've kind of jumped the shark - same as with the Greenwich Village Halloween Parade.

  4. THIS is why it was moved to the amphitheater. Look at all those filled bleachers. Not including the those on the sidewalk standing nearby. Over a thousand if not more people. This is why it can't be held in the Tompkins Park anymore. I am glad it was moved there and hope the dog owners had a magnificent time.

  5. This does feel like a shark jump. At least half the costume suck ass. The name of the game here is cuteness. You want your doggo to look cute and make people smile and laugh. Please don't try to express your cleverness, or your political statements, or your abstract concepts. I propose a rule for this contest: no cardboard.

  6. I very much like the DOG dressed as the Pope, specifically b/c it took a HUGE amount of work, talent & cleverness to create that very detailed outfit!
