Mahalo New York Bakery is closing on 9th Street; space will be for custom orders
[Photos Friday by Steven]
Mahalo New York Bakery, which serves Hawaiian-inspired desserts, has closed its outpost at 443 E. Ninth St. at Avenue A.
A note to customers on the front door explains... the owners will use the spot for appointment-only custom orders on weekends ... and will continue on at their flagship location on Myrtle Avenue in Glendale ...

The bakery opened this past March 10.
In other baked-good news on this block, Westville Bakery had its soft opening yesterday a few storefronts away toward First Avenue.

If they had any business sense, they would have first tried removing (or never installing) the display that encompasses the entire window. Basic business 101, people like to peek into stores. Not to mention it wasn't quite clear what the display was.,,,an art installation, a bakery mock display??. Whi!e on 9th street, Pizza Rollio looks as if it may be the next corpse. It basically has one employee, never any visible customers within or delivery people hanging out waiting for their orders.
ReplyDeleteLet's hope the sugar trend finally coming to an end and we can once again have variety in the neighborhood. I'd like to eat out in a place that isn't cupcakes or ramen.
ReplyDeleteEvery time I went by during normal biz hours, it was closed. That might be bad for biz!
ReplyDeleteAgree with the first commenter. I never knew this was a bakery just by looking at the window. I thought the display was for kitchenware.
ReplyDeleteNot much aloha at this place. The window display looked like a prison grille and all they had was stupid cupcakes and such. it was supposedly Hawaiian and yet no malasadas, the iconic and yummy Island doughnuts? It was usually closed and the one time it was open and I went in, the counter person kept her back silently turned to me the whole time. So I left. No loss. I will give Westville Bakery a try. I miss the place on 11th and 1st and their delicious cookies. And why can’t we have a place with good white bread and nice rolls like the original Ninth Street Bakery used to have? It’s all foo-foo little millennial cupcakes and pestilential pastries now. Boo hiss. At least we still have Moishe’s.
ReplyDelete@Peachy...Oh yes, I remember the Ninth St Bakery. How could anyone forget. The owner would put something you ordered in a bag(sometimes looked like it had been used) then take a bite of something from the shelf, put something more in your bag, maybe trip over some clutter that was sitting around for years and years, etc. It was quite the show!
ReplyDeleteI loved the 9th Street Bakery..best raisin pumpernicle bread and chocolate babka.
ReplyDelete9th Street Bakery, best corn muffins ever. The size of Conestoga wagon wheels, and unbelievable when grilled and slathered with butter.
ReplyDeleteNever even tempted to enter this place primarily due to the aforementioned horrible window display.
ReplyDeleteBring back The Black Hound!
Their display was horrible , and honestly their cupcakes arent good at all ! I rather go to the supermarket and make cupcakes out of the cake mix box !
