First Avenue has been closed at Ninth Street for the FDNY equipment.
We'll continue to update as more information becomes available...
Update 1
Four firefighters and two residents were hurt in the five-alarm fire, ABC 7 reports. All of the injuries are said to be minor.
Per ABC:
The fire broke out on the first floor of a five-story apartment building on 1st Avenue just before 2 a.m.
Fire spread through the building quickly.
Update 2
NBC 4 states nine injuries, including seven firefighters — one of who was seriously injured.
No immediate cause for the fire, officials say.

The ground floor is occupied by Uogashi, the Japanese restaurant.
Update 3
The FDNY is calling this a 6-alarm fire now...

Update 7 9 a.m.
More from ABC 7:
Flames spread to a small section of rear of the building, which partially collapsed and could safely not accessed by firefighters.
"Much of the roof on the first floor extension has burned away, but because of the collapse hazard we can't get in there. And that's the problem, why we can't put this fire out right now," Chief James Leonard, FDNY Chief of Department.
They poured water on the small section, waiting for the roof to collapse so they could fully extinguish it.
Until then, the smoldering section spewed heavy smoke that prompted firefighters to evacuate five adjacent buildings.
This aerial view shows the collapse in the structure behind the building... part of Uogashi?
The injured list is now reportedly at 14 — including 11 firefighters, mostly smoke for inhalation and heat exhaustion.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
The Red Cross is on the scene...

The sushi restaurant has an extension that goes behind the building — they essentially had built a 1 story building over the rear garden to make the restaurant bigger—and it’s a total loss. It’s still on fire. There are NYU students and AirBnB tourists (of course) who are displaced from the apartments above. Lucky for Hnadsome Dans Candy Stand that they closed down last week, but not so lucky for everyone else. Hopefully the mosque, Sahara East, Tree, Atomic Wings, Rossman computer repair, and the new spot Chelsea Thai, which replaced Neptune Diner a few doors down, are all Ok.
ReplyDeleteSmell of smoke and helicopters woke me up in the middle of the night in my apartment A and 12th. Had to close all my windows, but couldn't tell where the fire was. Thanks for the report EV.
ReplyDeleteVery sad for the occupants of the building. Hopefully, the adjacent buildings and occupants are affected as little as possible. It is a beautiful full block of old walk up building facades that face 1st Ave. It will be sad if they decide to build (no idea if that is the consequence of the fire yet) a modern building there that does not fit in.
ReplyDeleteHow terrifying for anyone in those buildings; I hope that this will be contained as much as possible for the sake of everyone involved. To be forced to evacuate your apartment in the middle of the night - just terrifying.
ReplyDeletePlease keep us updated.
I know the fire is still in progress, but if anyone hears of a way that we can help out those displaced let us know!
ReplyDeleteWe are lucky to live in a city with such awesome and heroic first responders. Hopefully those injured recover quickly and that those displaced from their homes find the support and resources they need to relocate.
ReplyDeleteWe should all be grateful to New York's Bravest. More people need to leave flowers at Engine 5 for the anniversary of 9-11 - this year there were two - two - bunches of flowers. That's it. And yes mine was one of them. That's shameful.
ReplyDeleteI agree, if there's information available as to how anyone can help please post. Can this fire is still burning and people are being treated for injuries and displaced from their homes and yet some people have the audacity to already worry about replacement buildings. SMH. God bless the FDNY.

Grieve, I also want to say that if there is any way the community can be of help to the people displaced, please let us know. My heart goes out to every person affected by this fire, and my sincere thanks to the NYFD for being the best.
ReplyDeleteI'll echo Anonymous at 6:15PM in saying the NYFD is the best; they always come through.
ReplyDeleteNow is also the most pivotal time to Pattonize nearby east village businesses.
