Crooked Tree closes after 20 years on St. Mark's Place
After 20 years of serving up crêpes and other cafe fare at 110 St. Mark's Place, Crooked Tree has closed here between Avenue A and First Avenue.
The closure came after service on Valentine's Day. (You can read their thank you to patrons on Facebook here.)
The owners of David's Cafe right next door were on this month's CB3-SLA agenda for a new liquor license for this space. The CB3 paperwork was on display outside the cafe in recent weeks...
Crooked Tree owner Daniel Rivera is also a partner in David's Cafe. Not sure at the moment what they have planned for the former Crooked Tree. The questionnaire on file at the CB3 website (PDF here) doesn't contain too many revealing details.

This is really upsetting. This was our favorite go-to place over the years. It was always nice and neighborhoody, charming, not another idiotic-IG place. The crepes were always consistently delicious, service was good. If we were lucky to get a table by the window, it was truly lovely. I seriously can't believe one of my all-time favorite places in the east village is gone. Heartbroken.
ReplyDeleteLots of good memories there! Hope the owner's new venture is successful.
ReplyDeleteI am sad. Just over the past two months, there have been several closures of places which make the EV what it is: a neighborhood. I've lost count actually. If regular, everyday people cannot sustain the enormous rents and costs of maintaining a business operation catering to customers, whom will step up and sign a new lease? Very unfortunate state of affairs. Oh, and yes, I too had crepes on many occasions there. Delicious and affordable. One more loss for our hood.
ReplyDeleteThis was a unique place. When businesses such as this close, it leaves an imprint on the neighborhood. We don't need more ramen, cupcake or frozen yogurt shops. We need independent owners with a special name and presence. This closure also reminds of me Tree Bistro on first ave, another unique locale, which has been closed since last fall due to that awful fire in the Japanese restaurant nearby They have been "temporarily closed," for almost six months. Makes me wonder if they too will never return :(
ReplyDeleteIt's amazing to think at the closing of a restaurant could leave me heartbroken. This really was my favorite place in the entire city, not just the East Village. I have so many fond memories, including a birthday party there and my first date with my husband. I'm grateful for the delicious food and fabulous memories...
ReplyDeleteLoved this place, to say nothing of their excellent coffee and food fare. The old dude who always hangs out in the buidling's doorway said they won the mega millions? Happy rumor even if not true! They were really nice folks.
ReplyDeleteLoved the crepes here and the breakfast in general. The atmosphere was great too. I always made it a point to eat here when I visited my brother in Manhattan. Sad the place is closed, and nostalgic! Thank you for the memories crooked tree cafe :)
