At the Heap of Ruins Garden Party
On Friday night, performance artist Monty Cantsin (aka Istvan Kantor, a founder of the Neoism movement) hosted a garden party in Lot6C — aka that long-vacant lot on the northeast corner of Avenue C and Sixth Street...
EVG correspondent Stacie Joy stopped by the space, described as an experimental trash-art garden ...
[Cantsin]
The evening included Cantsin opening up a vein in his arm to create some of his trademarked blood art (you can read about his 40-year-history of his blood work here) ...
There were promises of future events here... but for how long is unknown. There are now approved plans with the city for a 6-floor residential building for this lot.

Feels Very old school EV..
ReplyDeleteI live up block and did not hear them.. so that is good
I won't buy any more "blood art" until it comes in another color.
ReplyDeleteA bunch of people fled at the blood art point - couldn't figure out if it was paprika or hot pepper powder he dumped all over himself prior to that.

That was my first thought as well! Reminded me of the Gas Station. I remember a particular show there that featured artwork made with the artists's HIV-positive blood and perhaps other body fluids. It was beautiful stuff, really. xo, jg
hell yes! stay wild forever!
ReplyDeleteYes, I almost beat the crap out him on Stanton Street for attempting to waste FDNY's night and ruin their dinner. These decent, brave saints who lost so much on 9/11; who saved my building from a two-alarm fire; my brother-in-law.
ReplyDeleteThat asshole had already done his fire performance inside, hitting a piece of my artwork w/ a stick, practically setting fire to a theremin musician in a highly flammable costume. After the performances, the nut went outside with a can of fire starter and attempted to pull a stunt, directly next to another artist/performer, who was wearing flowing/flammable costumes, sitting on top of a motor vehicle decorated with paper, fabric, junk. There were no fire extinguishers, and many witnesses. Long story short, I took off my jacket, said come on motherfucker, let's GO! I am strong, very strong. He’s lucky... I AM WOMEN, hear my Leo roar.
Thanks to evgrieve.com for the above notes and pics capturing the "garden party" I organized to honor the great efforts of X Pitts, American Defender, once a homeless at Tompkins Sqare Park, poet, community activist. The event took place at LOT6C, Lower East Side, NYC, on July 26.It was Pitts who took over this rat infested corner and turned it into a social meeting place. I conducted the event with the hope that it will help to bring local creative people together to make shit happen again like we used to do before gentrification took over and before the hard core art community was evicted, exterminated, chased out. If you are too young to remember of those times it would have been a great experience for you to learn and if you are old enough to relate to what I'm talking about but want to deny that you were also part of the creative madness and mayhem then regard yourself as a traitor to your comrades. LOT6C is the last remaining free location of the LES/EAST VILLAGE territory, a tiny sacred land in the middle of Total Disaster. God Bless X Pitts! Fight gentrification to the last drop of blood! "Yes, I am Monty Cantsin! Neoist open-pop-star, immortal hard art singer, self-appointed leader of the people of the Lower East Side!" From Ahora Neoismus, 1988, LP
