For her latest "A visit to" post, EVG contributor Stacie Joy stopped by a local business that doesn't need much introduction — Yonah Schimmel's Knish Bakery.
The business, which Yonah Schimmel, a Romanian immigrant, started as a knish pushcart in Coney Island sometime in the 1890s, has been at 137 E. Houston St. at Forsyth since 1910. And the knishery has retained much of its charm — there's the tin ceiling, red flooring, operating dumbwaiter and overall time-warp vibe.
Ellen Anistratov runs Yonah Schimmel with her two sons, David (in yellow baseball cap) and Joseph (in the white cap). Ellen Anistratov, a fourth-generation relative of Yonah Schimmel, recently told NY1's Roger Clark that they hope to be here for another 100 years... take a look around...

Hope they stay around for another 100 years!
A unique shop offering something that is not to be found anywhere else.
Totally awesome place. Really. Also, potatoes are a health food, yes white potatoes are good for you. Just don't put a lot of butter or cream on them.
I'm certain I wasn't the only one to consistently buy a knish and take in a movie at the Sunshine RIP next door.
Their knishes are delicious! And the nice counter people are happy to heat up a knish from the display case for takeout if you're not staying to be served at a table.
I never thought of stopping in to buy a knish to eat during a film at Sunshine Cinema, but I certainly used to get one afterwards to eat on my way home.
You're killing me Greive. I'm 40 miles away and dyin' for a kasha knish.
actually at the sadly departed Sunshine Cinema, a knish from Schimmel’s was the only outside food that was allowed into the theater... and yes, those knish are everything... shop local small businesses!
Katz's, Russ & Daughters, and Yonah Schimmel are of course a great New York triumvirate, all within a thousand feet of each other. The knishes at Yonah Shimmel are an acquired taste, so everyone should try them at least three times. YS also has excellent rugelach when available.
I hope your intrepid reporter asked them to put more blueberry in the blueberry knish. It's got too much cream cheese, too little blueberry! I beg of you!!
