A call to cancel SantaCon

Steven spotted this poster this morning on the former Bean space on First Avenue and Ninth Street... a call to cancel SantaCon, which takes place this coming Saturday at unknown locations. (Their party yachts plan sunk.)

The poster ask several questions, including: "Sick of drunken Santas throwing up and urinating everywhere?"

If so, then there is a Cancel SantaCon petition that you can find here.

The posters are from @tglnyc, who brought us the "McTrump Value Meal" yesterday at McDonald's.

  1. As I have posted at Face book and Twitter, if this "charity" event was a people of color event, the National Guard would have been called out. White privilege at its worst.

Of course I signed the petition.

  3. Over the past year we have once again lost so many East Village institutions including Moishe’s Bakery, Sidewalk Cafe, Manitobas, and 3 of The Bean’s coffee shop locations, but we still have to host SanatCon which is apparently too big and too drunk to fail.

I can't believe they almost got away with their party yacht scheme, which would have likely ended in tragedy and put the SantaCon organizers in jail alongside the brain trust behind The Fyre Festival. Instead, the tragedy is that we have to deal with SantaCon again. Can someone find out if their phony sounding charity drive is real or not? Maybe NY State AG Letitia James needs to look into this.

  4. I agree with Edmund Dunn, have made that comment here in past years as well.

  5. I have stopped complaining about this shitshow and just leave the city for the weekend and let all the bridge and tunnel bros and hos have the neighborhood for the day

  6. Well, I'd kind of like to see Item 2 on the complaint list so call my feelings "mixed." The thin veneer of a "charity" event is what makes this extra offensive so herewith is my proposal to save SantaCon. Make every participating bar levy a cover charge that goes to charity. $20 with an included beer or shot and the bar gets to keep $5. That would cut down the size considerably AND would actually raise some money.

  7. Giovanni I would also like to know more about their so-called charity. According to the recent John Oliver special, they claimed to have raised about $450k in about 9 years. He did the math based on the amount of people attending, and it works out to $1.66/douchebag.
It is not clear whether this is just NYC or all the cities altogether.

  8. I'm glad there are still some subversive people left. Starting to feel quite sterile and almost conservative around these parts, sad to say. Both this and the McTrump shit are pretty innocuous teasing, but better than nothing I guess.

  9. Have santacon in Hoboken between the path train and Hoboken being destroyed by drunks. The oraganizers will be sued.

  10. I'm sure de Blah-sio doesn't even know this is going on this weekend, or if he does, he probably considers it good, clean fun from his perc up at Gracie Mansion.

This administration is why NYC is going to hell in a handbasket at an ever-accelerating pace. NOBODY in charge at any level gives a rat's rear end about the actual quality of life of the majority of us (the majority of us don't need to be drunk & stupid to have a good time).

Someone should put out the word that the 'santas' are really here to protest Trump and climate change; THEN we'd have the NYPD and the FBI on them instantly!

  11. As a long term resident of the EV, words are inadequate to illustrate my disdain for this ridiculous, insufferable day. Most whom are a part of this shit show are obnoxious, entitled duche bags with no respect for our community. I won't go into detail, but as a bystander, I have witnessed some nasty stuff that is downright appalling. It truly is the worst day of the year for our city. Luckily, I have to work a twelve hour shift at my job, so hopefully, I will avoid most of it. I am thinking of my fellow neighbors. Hang in there!

  12. not sure--WHY WE COMPLAIN---EVERY YEAR---two days before the event?

Getting shit face, vomitting and wearing a $10 Santa costume is not subvertive it's called submitting to mob mentality. The fact that it is organized by people who have nothing to do with our neighborhood and it brings the worst out of people that participate is an offense to many of us who live here.

  14. Sad to hear, I forget every year. Wish this wasnt happening again. As a human it makes me sick As a business with Wiskey Town as our neighbor it is a challenging business day. The owners are nice and the fact they bring large groups of drunk, vomiting people to the block is not ok with me. Its challenging having a business without this going on.

  15. This is what happens when NYC tries to rip-off another city's event and doesn't organize it properly. The problem isn't the event itself - the problem is in HOW it's being run in NYC. Y'all ain't doin' it right, or there wouldn't be an issue.

  16. Worth remembering that Santa Con started out as a political protest against consumerism.

Somewhere it transformed/got hijacked into a frat-boy event that celebrates consumerism, excess and waste...

  17. Except for the Santa suits and the amount of people, I sadly don’t see the difference in the demographics and behavior of Santa Con and the typical denizens of the bar crowds of the EV and LES on a usual night

  18. @noble By subversive I meant to allude to the anti-Santacon and anti-Trump sentiments. Sorry for being unclear. Frat bro culture feels like the status quo now unfortunately. When I first saw the McTrump sign my first thought was "Oh dear, some proud boy's gonna get triggered and throw a brick now." Counterculture, nonconformity, individuality, art... these are now foreign concepts in NYC.

  19. What percentage of Santa's are "bad?" I don't have an answer - but I'm guessing not the majority. Is this a case of one bad apple (or 200 bad santas) ruining the whole bunch (10k?). Do you know that none of the organizers are EV? Is there a way to make SantaCon accountable for their "charity?" Since someone (above) says it is a thinly veiled charity, where does the money go? $10 x 6000 - $60,000. What costs do the organizers have? I don't know the answers.

  20. Some bar owners refuse to participate in this disgusting bro vomit fest and post bouncers at their door to keep out their trashy groups. It'd be helpful to have a list of those bars so that us locals know where to patronize on that day, and throughout the year as a thanks for having those community's back.

  21. My customers on the tour bus used to love drunken Santa wannabes stumble all over the place.
