Are you missing your pet parrot?
Several readers noticed an exotic bird out in the wild this morning in Tompkins Square Park nearest to the entrance at Seventh Street and Avenue B.
EVG reader Clint was able to corral the bird, and now has it at home for safekeeping...
Per Clint: "It is a black-headed caique. It's very friendly and tame. It was obviously someone's pet and well cared for."
Does it belong to you?
Updated 1/31
Clint has not found the owner yet. There is a lead that it may belong to someone at St. Brigid's. Clint is talking contact there today.

Thank you Clint for rescueing this beautiful bird. They are not designed for 25 degree weather & were it still outside at sunset, it probably would have died. Thank you so much
ReplyDeleteGreat job, Clint! I hope this little guy’s owner sees this and claims him.
ReplyDeleteYay, Clint. Hero of the day.
ReplyDeleteThis could be the bird from the St. Brigid St. Emeric office
ReplyDeletePlease make sure the "owner" can prove it is their bird, time date photos would be proof. Oh and if they offer a reward, take it.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Clint, for taking this bird in from the cold & making sure it's safe.
ReplyDeleteYes!!! thanks
ReplyDeleteHow did you do that, Clint??
ReplyDeleteFormer intern of a wildlife bird rehabilitation center here!
ReplyDeletePlease give Wild Bird Fund on the Upper West Side a call (+1 646-306-2862), to see what they would advise doing! They may prefer the lovely bird be brought in to be checked to see whether it is dehydrated, would check for any internal or external injuries, and would ensure it is getting the appropriate feed. They may also come pick it up themselves or perhaps just give you great advice!, though the trip to their location is absolutely worth it (they have many lovely species around). I dropped off a pigeon that couldn't move a few years ago, there are no costs, and you can follow up on a bird's progress and recovery.
Mistakes happen, but unfortunately, it's not a good sign this fellah was out to begin with. I'm very happy someone saw them and Clint brought them to a warm, safe place, so thank you!
And for future bird encounters, here are some tips: https://www.wildbirdfund.org/how-to-help/rescue/
Let's care for our neighbors <3
There is a parrot 911 group on facebook where missing birds are posted. I would encourage reaching out to them as well.
ReplyDeleteI posted it there yesterday.
DeleteThank you for making the effort to catch him. I hope you find his owner.
ReplyDeleteGood job Clint!!!
ReplyDeleteThey escaped so easily 😥
I still missed my lost birds 😪
God Bless you for saving that beautiful bird! I’m a parrot 🦜 owner of a blue crowned conure..👍🦜🎉🙏
ReplyDeleteMy hats off to you man. I would be heartbroken if I lost my Amazon.
ReplyDeleteKudos Clint, you just earned a lot of points in the bird kingdom...
ReplyDeleteFor sure.
DeleteKudos, I've had birds. Through out my life and one pro thing to do with all birds you love, Clip their flight feathers. It's so overlooked and just not thought of until their gone out the door or window. Beautiful bird for sure.
DeleteWhat a beautifull bird!!
ReplyDeleteWhen the owner does come forward if the parrot you found has a band on his leg just ask the owner to verify what's on the band. If no band most parrots come to their name. I have a peach faced lovebird which is 11 years old, I would not want anything to happen to him. Thank you for saving him/her.
ReplyDeleteGreat job Clint he would have froze to death for sure without your help. He obviously has belonged to someone. Clip his flight feathers as a ceiling fan can be a deadly encounter and it will help you in maintaining g control over him. It's like trimming your nails. Most bird stores can do it for you. Good luck finding the owner if not they do make nice pets.
ReplyDeleteThank you soooo much for rescuing this bird. If mine were to manage an escape I would be devastated and terrified for them because they are neither prepared to survive nor designed for this climate. He would likely not have survived the day, certainly not the night. The world needs more compassionate souls like yours.
ReplyDeleteI am so glad you got him! I would be devastated if one of my parrots would’ve escaped
ReplyDeleteBe sure you get proof of ownership. There is NO reason that bird should have been out in the cold.
ReplyDeleteGreat job . I wish I can find pair of one my canary wings parrot . I lost that one 5 months ago in Montgomery (Alabama) Near Eastern blvd . I still have one of them but they were together since I got them . After he flew away I tried went same place to find him coz we all miss him and specially other parrot who’s with me .this Perot also got panic coz he didn’t see him .i missing him just like family person .
ReplyDeleteI just lost my 2 conures ( they passed) and I am so heartbroken. I cannot even begin to tell you the pain I am. I cried tears of joy as I came across this picture and article. Thank you for taking him in and trying to help him find his way home.
ReplyDeleteIf taking care of him until his owner is found is something that you can’t do, I am interested in fostering him. I live in Staten Island and currently have an aviary with seven birds and currently rehabilitating two birds that have been abused by previous owners. I am currently taking a test online to get a permit to rehabilitate wild birds. And even though I wasn’t licensed previously I have rehabilitated wild birds before and restore them back to health. I have a big cage that would be perfect for him. My house is a happy house that loves birds. Great job on your rescue, my email is alisonburke2006@gmail.com
ReplyDeleteThanks for saving this beautiful bird.
ReplyDeleteThank you for saving that pretty baby! I would die if something like that happened to my Grey!
ReplyDeleteI know Clint from the neighborhood. If you haven’t had the pleasure of meeting him, you’re missing out. He is a great person with a heart of gold, and never judges anyone. He is always willing to help the community and always gets involved. He was the right person for this important rescue mission.
ReplyDeleteClint has a a great contributor to the community. I’m so glad he was there are the right place at the right time to save this beautiful bird. He’s a gem in the community.
ReplyDeleteI have a grey too! They’re the best. Caiques are like feather-puppies, adorable playful little birds. Why s/he hasn’t been claimed already is very disturbing because this parrot’s person WILL be freaking out over losing their bird...
ReplyDeleteThat bird belongs to the priest from St Brigid. That's the male and he also has the female.
