Ralph’s is hiring on Avenue A
As first noted back in early March, an outpost of Ralph's Famous Italian Ices & Ice Cream is coming to 145 Avenue A and Ninth Street.
And this location is hiring... kind of difficult to see, but there is a handwritten sign on the front window with an email address to use if you're interested in a job here (RalphsIcesEastVillage@gmail.com)...
The business dates to 1928 when Ralph Silvestro started selling Italian ice (or water ice) from his truck around Staten Island. The first retail store opened in 1949 on Port Richmond Avenue in Staten Island. In recent years the company has franchised out, expanding to other parts of NYC as well as Long Island, New Jersey and Westchester County.
No word on an opening date yet for Ralph's, which takes over the storefront from Gelarto.

This is an ICON building right? I won't support any business which has leased from ICON.
ReplyDeleteWhy blame the small business when they are putting up with a bad landlord, just to serve our community?
ReplyDeleteIf you're a regular reader of this blog, such as myself, you should be well aware that this is an ICON building. So, having to put it out there as a question in your comment, just to respond with complete irrational answer to your own question, is the height privilege.
ReplyDelete@11:01am: I also don't do business with businesses located in ICON owned buildings. I don't want a single penny of my money going to those lousy landlords. That's my opinion, and I vote with my $$.
ReplyDeleteFurther, there's NO SHORTAGE of NON-Icon-owned retail properties for rent, so not sure why anyone would choose to sign a lease with Icon. Icon is not going to be the "good" landlord ever for anyone (whether residential or commercial).
Location, location, location
DeleteMaybe because the store is already built out as an ice cream shop. This post isn't about the evils of icon, but rather a new business in the neighborhood that is looking to EMPLOY people.
DeleteLike the others here we won't do business with any of the stores at this location as long as ICON is running the show. Not sure what the story is on Social Tees but other than that potential tenants should know we don't support poor behavior by ICON and that there are tangible costs associated with associating with them. Best, JG
ReplyDeleteAfter I was harassed for years by my landlord Ben Shaoul (unsuccessfully), I held a personal grudge for some time after that. It didn't lead anywhere. I might have thrown a rotten tomato his direction had I seen him on the street, but I wouldn't have thought of taking it out on his commercial tenants, because that would be crazy.
ReplyDeleteI guess we should also boycott any business that pays taxes to the United States too, because the economy was built on genocide and slavery and no one should be rewarded for that?
What the commenter mentioned above is not a regular boycott, which would mean simply urging others not to rent properties from ICON. By taking it out on ICON's innocent-bystander tenants, it's more akin to what's called "cancel culture." Cancel culture represents a shallow, quick-fix approach to complex issues and problems.
Except I agree with getting rid of the Confederate statues, those really should be somewhere out of view of the general public.
Gelarto was delicious
