Workers have put in a new playground and spray shower as well as safety surfacing, benches, lighting, play equipment, etc.
And there's a new "comfort station"...
And a view through the fence...
And for more details on the final product...
The NYC Parks website states that the project is 84-percent complete. There's a September completion date, though the rendering onsite lists a summer finish.

Here's a look at the reconstruction of the McKinley Playground on Fourth Street between Avenue A and First Avenue... where work started last September here adjacent to The Neighborhood School (PS 363) and Star Academy (PS 63).

Playground renovations managed by Parks department are always so inefficient and expensive. Sauer Park was also closed in October 2019 but work only started in December. For 2 months people were deprived of their public space for no reason. When the Trust for Public Land renovated PS19 playground, twice the size of Sauer Park they shut down the playground in January, work was performed every day and the ribbon cutting was held in June just in time for the community to have access to the public space for the summer months (July 2018). This is of course old history because since January 2020 PS19 playground is not open to the public: the DeBlasio administration cut the funding for the schools’s custodian to manage the playground. Same for the E12th St playground between Av B and Av C (CWS, EVCS, P94 school building). Sauer Park today after school hours is over capacity, same at Tompkins Square Park. Amazing huge Public Spaces are sitting empty.
ReplyDeleteThat 4 foot high fence won't keep that park from use after dark. I wouldn't want to be part of the cleanup crew.
ReplyDeleteDo we ever get our libraries back?
ReplyDeletegood, all parks should be open 24/7
ReplyDelete@noble it is across from the police station, basically. That should dampen some of the shenanigans.
ReplyDeleteThis is on 4th b/t A and 1st. The 9th precinct is on 5th b/t 1st and 2nd.
Delete@grieve, oops, not the one I thought. Yeap, it’ll be a mess.
ReplyDeleteIt would be nice if they opened it before the school year ended so the kids could use it for end of year activities outdoors, especially after the year they have had. And yes, my child goes to the school...don’t wait til September!!
