As rather sarcastically noted yesterday, there's a new Kraft Macaroni & Cheese-flavored ice cream mashup with Van Leeuwen. (The limited-edition flavor was created in celebration of National Mac and Cheese Day.)
So EVG contributor Stacie Joy decided to try it. (For the record — no one asked her to do this!)
Here's Stacie's report:
Went to the Seventh Street Van Leeuwen to try the Kraft mac-n-cheese flavor and it's good. I was prepared to hate it but it's solid. It tastes just like the blue box mac and cheese, right down to the slippery soft noodle taste. Savory.
While there, Stacie came across someone else trying the new flavor (no word if anyone asked her to try it!)...

ReplyDeleteHere's a suggestion for a Mashup. How about Lox and Cream Cheese and Chocolate Pecan ice cream? (You can do the Hmmm in your own minds..)
ReplyDeleteI don’t understand the skepticism around it. Obviously it’ll taste good. Mac and cheese is diary and carbs so cheese will naturally taste good in a dairy heavy dessert like ice cream.

ReplyDeleteI tried it yesterday myself, and it was...fine. It didn't taste much like mac & cheese, in my opinion. Mostly just sweet.
ReplyDeleteIt's COLD mac n'cheese...sounds perfectly unappetizing and it shouldn't be sweets. Only desserts are. But cheese?

ReplyDeleteWhen I was a kid, I visited New Orleans quite a bit. At the Dreyers in the French Quarter, they offered a creole ice cream flavor consisting of bell peppers, andouille sausage and lots of spices. It was definitely weird, but not awful. I had a it on cone a couple of times and that was it for me. I agree. I think ice cream should be sweet and not savory, but since I live on 7th street, I might be obliged to try this now just for the hell of it.

ReplyDeleteFunnily enough we have been chatting on and off with Mikey from Mikey's Likes It about a cheesy ice cream flavor. Not Kraft Powder flavor mind you, but some real cheese. Looks like we need to up the priority on that project!

Also Sundaes & Cones on 10th street always has some good savory flavors. They used to have a Wasabi ice cream that was surprisingly good.
If Van Leeuwen introduced a vegan mac-n-cheeze ice cream, I would try that at least once; I can imagine the sweet-and-savory play of flavors would at least be interesting. (I'd even try it if they put onions in it!)

Thanks for trying it out and reviewing it, Stacie! I wanna try it now! It's the right shade of orange (a friend purports that there are no bad orange foods). Cheddar cheese in desserts is common in Philippine cuisine, can sometimes find cheddar ice cream with corn kernels at the Philippine grocery store on Ave A.
