RIP Joe the tailor

Several readers have shared the sad news that Joe Ariyav, the longtime proprietor of Joe's Custom Tailors on 14th Street, has passed away. We hope to get some more details soon.

The sign about Ariyav's death arrived last week on the storefront here between First Avenue and Second Avenue (H/T @brohattan). The notice instructs customers to call a number to retrieve any items that may be inside.

We knew that Joe's had been around for years, but was surprised to read via Manhattan Sideways that the shop dates to 1965.

So sorry to hear this, I took my boss's dry cleaning & tailoring to him for years – he was a lovely man

I tried to send this 3x I hope EV receives it.
I knew Joe 35 years. He had a sense of humor. He loved birds he told me, and would sew and listen to birdsongs on his phone. We often talked about the changes in the retail businesses.I was worried when I saw the store closed and had a bad feeling. While it is sad he never got to retire, the store was his world to the end. I will miss him. He was in the neighborhood for decades. The store never changed. There was a comfort in that.Thank you EV for reporting this sad news

Joe was a neighborhood fixture on the block. He almost never missed a day working at his store...although the writing was on the wall with laundry/dry clean apps and a more modern dry clean store around the block on 2nd Ave...Joe continued, he knew your name, greeted you with a smile. He will be missed.....

Thank you to everyone for the lovely comments regarding my father Joe. He passed away suddenly on July 8 from complications from a stroke. He was unable to fully recover from the initial stroke. He was in the neighborhood for 30 years and loved the people and loved to work.

With Covid and all that's been happening, I had not been to see Joe in a long while...I knew him ever since he took over the store, "loved" the guy, chatted with him about Russia, politics, life. He always did a great job, no matter what and would offer to drop off whatever I brought him, on his way home.

I was ready to head over there today, with cleaning and repair items but something told me to call first to make sure and when the phone kept ringing and ringing I had a gut feeling that something was not right...and when I saw this notice could not help but feel so very, very sad that I never had a chance to say goodbye. I always cautioned Joe about his weight, my dad had also been overweight and died after having a stroke, so this his hit close to home. My deepest, belated condolences to the family. Joe was unique, special, and always a pleasure to be greeted by him when I came in. So very, very sad about this loss of this neighborhood treasure.
