That is a lot of work. I know. For three years I have been hauling gallons of water from my 6th floor apartment two-thirds of a city block to water two tree pits I care for. I know what dedication and brawn this takes. Every newly planted tree requires a minimum of 30 gallons of water each week of its first summer. Please water the street trees. We need them to combat global warming and keep our air clean.
Thank you Jenny Kas! And thankful for this rare occasion that the city installed a real pedestrian island to protect the bike lane and shorten the crosswalk (Bloomberg administration of course, DeBlasio administration it is just painted islands used as parking spots for NYPD employees).
The answer isn't all that straightforward on Google but typically yes, they have to be replanted every year, although there are some varieties that don't.
A raised bed of pressure treated 2 X 8s would help the cause. It would allow for deeper root penetration, retain the moisture longer and prevent the dirt from spilling out.
Ten years ago Raquel had a vision and started the garden, and has kept it thriving for many years all on her own! Now with the help from friends we have created a bountiful array for all to enjoy! Jenny & Michael
Congratulations Jenny on the attention your flower garden is receiving! It’s wonderful to know that it’s appreciated everyday by so many people! You’ve always had a green thumb! Love, Jo
