The FDNY quickly brought it under control. No word at the moment on the extent of the damage or if there were any injuries. There isn't any official word on the cause.

There weren't any injuries. It's not immediately known how much water damage there is in the building.

Fun City, the recently expanded retail tenant here, suffered some water damage. Both sides of the shop will need renovations, per the Fun CIty Instagram account.
Next door to the Physical Graffiti building, this is holy ground!

ReplyDeleteEvery time I see a fire I start ranting about the need to retrofit these buildings with sprinkler systems.
ReplyDeleteWalked by Thursday morning. Windows were boarded up on 4th floor, and you could smell the smoke. Slew of floor fans were being brought in - likely to dry it out and vent the air.

ReplyDeleteTo 11:47 a.m. who is most likely a landlord: There would be work involved in retrofitting these buildings with sprinklers, but it can certainly be done without forcing residents to move out. A building on my block, for example, recently had all the gas pipes for each apartment moved. It involved tearing up portions of walls inside closets and in kitchens, and it was a pain but it is absolutely doable and involved a few hours of work over a few days in each apartment. The crews minimized dust by creating plastic barriers around each work area. And do you not understand the lifesaving value of sprinkler systems? I would rather have water damage than die in a fire. There is water damage and much more fire damage and injury and death in buildings that don't have sprinkler systems. The landlords who own these old tenements don't want to spend the money of course but sprinklers are a modern safety convenience all buildings should have. It is especially crucial in buildings that have restaurants on the lower levels. They updated these buildings to have bathrooms. They can update them to have sprinkler systems. We need to press our elected officials on this. They won't do it because they are in the pocket of the real estate industry. But they should do it.
ReplyDeleteThese old buildings are so frightening. You are only as safe as your next-door neighbor is careful and your landlord is on top of keeping the building up-to-date on repairs.
