Owner Beatriz Gutierrez confirmed the news (H/T Elsie) to EVG contributor Stacie Joy.
Gutierrez said Victor, her longtime cook, suffered a loss during the pandemic — his brother died. Victor wants and needs to return home to be with his family in Mexico.
Gutierrez said that she has repeatedly tried to find kitchen staff but can't, so she is forced to close Barnyard. She stressed that this is not a lack-of-business issue — it's wholly staffing-related.
She has a lease on the space until the end of November and may do some catering here. Gutierrez also said she may hold on to the storefront for another venture in the future, though she isn't sure right at this moment.
Barnyard, which offers cheeses, cured meats, salads and delicious specialty sandwiches, first opened in 2008 on Ninth Street and Avenue C ... moving to its current location in late 2016.
Her companion shop next door, Brix Wines, will remain open.

Good people. Good food. Condolences to Victor.
ReplyDeleteMy goodness Grieve.. it’s a bad news beat on B morning. Love both Barnyard and Rue B. They’ll be missed.
ReplyDeleteBarnyard, Rue B, and Papaya Dog!!! The hits just keep coming.
ReplyDeleteVery sad to lose Barnyard. I've been getting sandwiches there since I moved to the neighborhood in 2011. I hope the owner is able to do something else with the space.
ReplyDeleteNooooo!
ReplyDeleteOne of the best food places in the EV. Sad to see them go.
ReplyDeleteDamn. This was such a good place. I am shocked. I always got their Figgy Piggy and asked them to add extra fig jam and basil. They obliged, charged a little extra and were so cool. I might have to stop in today, get one more last sandwich and say goodbye. This is a huge loss for our neighborhood. I wish Beatriz and Victor the very best.
ReplyDeleteI’ve been patronizing Beatriz and her fantastic businesses since she opened Brix Wines back when it was on 9th street, hoping she can regroup and start another business in the space.
ReplyDeleteI loved their meatball subs. So sad to lose a great sandwich place.
ReplyDeleteDevastating news. Best sandwiches in the 'hood.
ReplyDeleteWow, such a bummer. It's been so busy lately! Strange they couldn't find anyone...didn't even know they were trying to hire?
ReplyDeleteBest sandwich place. Sorry to see them go.
ReplyDeleteSad to hear for Victor and Barnyard.
ReplyDeleteI get it had many challenges finding help for my shop during pandemic. Now that unemployment has mostly ended, more people are available. It takes many tries, I am still hiring a PT, grateful for the great staff I have.
I have a feeling good things will be happening at the space on ave B. & for Beatriz.
My deepest condolences to Victor and his family back home. It is the toughest thing to go through.
ReplyDeleteNoooooo!! So hard to get a great veggie sandwich around here.
ReplyDeleteI'm still so sad about this, someone in the neighborhood should take over the space and offer sandwiches like they did - we need it!
