Election results: Rivera, Marte win local City Council races

Carlina Rivera has won another term as District 2 City Council member.

According to tallies from the Board of Elections, Rivera easily topped indpendent candidate Juan Pagan and neighborhood candidate Allie Ryan with nearly 80 percent of the votes.
In the District 1 race for City Council, which includes Chinatown, Little Italy and the Lower East Side, Christopher Marte had more than 70 percent of the vote in beating Republican candidate Jacqueline Toboroff and independent Maud Maron.
Here's Rivera's statement... And from Marte's camp...

And as expected in the race for mayor, Eric Adams "cruised to victory" in the general election over Republican Curtis Sliwa. You can find the full NYC results here.

  1. Carlina has been a disaster for our district. She joined the political machine and has sold us. our East River Park, our neighborhood's protective zoning, to the develepr juggernault. It is so unfortunate that so many people pay little to no attention to her actions but instead vote for her because they recognize her name.

  2. I am quite disappointed this woman has won yet another term. As a progressive democrat, I voted for her opponent, Allie Ryan. What is most unforgivable is how Carolina feigns concern for our community and the problems we face. We are about to witness the demolition of our beloved East River Park in a matter of days, which she is proudly behind. This is about bolstering her personal wealth and accumulating more power. If she truly cared about us as fellow neighbors, she would have opposed this measure. I don't care whether you are running on a liberal or conservative campaign, when you pretend to be someone else just to climb into office addressing certain pressing issues and then turn your head against the backs on the people whom elected you; it is a grave and cowardly injustice to all. No congratulations from me.

  3. IMO---using carlina rivera as a scapegoat for anything that may be perceived as 'unfair' for our community has always been a red herring---BTW---her name is CARLINA not CAROLINA :)

  4. Carlina is a joke. All identity politics. Oh yeah let's close a major neighborhood avenue like a bunch of hippies who don't know how the world works practically yet destroy an entire park instead of handling it properly. Disgusting.

  5. To the people who voted for Carlina, I have to ask WHY? Please list what she has done for this neighborhood besides enabling East River Park to be demolished.

  6. Funny, for all of the complaining about Carlina I don't recall anyone here overloading comments with tales of how they worked the streets stumping for one of her opponents. No, instead all complaints about trees, free car parking, another bar opening or Santa's getting drunk. No URL's directing readers here to her opponents webpages, nothing! You reap what you sow.

Her voting record speaks for itself, it is indefensible and she deserves our contempt.

  8. This city is locked into fear voting for Democrats in general. A lot of people I know said things similar to: "I don't like Adams or Rivera but they're the only Democrat choice". Voting for a different party or platform does not make you weak, wrong, or incorrect. A vote enforces your opinion, so if you end up at the booth and vote straight down the line, the result is going to be a continuation of the poor representation in government, more corporate influence, etc. But hey at least you can say you're a part of the Democrat Party-line Voters Club. Don't let extremists for your opinion. Very disappointing election results.

  10. @1:22 that fear makes sense in the case of Adams. If enough people voted 3rd party or stayed home, Curtis Sliwa would be mayor and that would be a worse outcome. A similar thing happened with Bloomberg in 2001, and he steamrolled his way into 3 terms.

  11. Maybe he can save €ast River Park!

  12. the actual number of votes cast that actually made the decision is absurdly small compared to the population.

  13. @3:12pm: Yes, and that's the entire problem in a nutshell. People love to gripe, but they can't be arsed to spend 10 minute at their polling place (or to get an absentee ballot, for crying out loud) to actually vote for or against all the people who are in charge of the future of this city.

We get the government we deserve, and apparently b/c so many NY'ers are lazy SOB's, we are doomed to be ruled by people who are arguably not the best for the job. Some of the elected official are not even mildly interested in doing the job, but they do love them their perks!

  14. IMO, Rivera sure has figured out what a comfy gravy train she's on, and she probably plans to make a career of it. Beats working!

Re: Adams, he needs to get his ducks in order and be ready to be effective starting immediately on Jan. 1st. I hope the first thing he does is fire the effing "night life mayor" and her overpaid staff.

  15. New York City's 2nd City Council district
Registered voters (2021) 126,576 of that amount,
only 13,116 voted for Carlina Rivera

113,460 people did NOT vote for Carlina Rivera
Of these people who did not vote, how many of them live along East River Park?
Do they know where she stands on the destruction of our park full of healthy mature trees?

  16. Word on the street has it that Carlina will be elected as the next City Council Speaker, because so many members were term-limited out; from there it's a short step to more city/statewide office. We won't be getting rid of her any time soon...

    1. Exactly. Adams will be Mayor for 8 years. She gets a high profile position and lots of free publicity. Then she can run for Mayor. Her entire platform will consist of NYC never having a female Mayor. Gender/ Identity politics.

  17. A friend worked at a polling station. The report: "Only the elderly vote in the East Village." Very few voters under 50 compared to the neighborhood.

  18. I am so embarrassed that In the previous election, I voted for Carlina. I have been sorely disappointed by her voting pattern in situations that drastically affect our neighborhood and enjoyment of the city. Before the governor’s island vote to upzone, I contacted her office by email and specifically asked what her stance was on govern’s island. No reply.

And Where was she when there was so much outrage over the city scrapping the east river plan that the community worked on with them in meetings for YEARS? She basically whispered that they needed to be more transparent about how the new plan came about. What BS from her!
I voted for one of her competitors this time around.

  19. For those of whom defending Carlina, do some of you have short term memory loss or do you wish to turn a blind eye to what is really happening to the East Village? What exactly has she done for our district besides a champion for East River Park to be demolished? Please cite some specific examples. I'd love to hear them. I voted for her in 2017 when she stepped into office thinking how wonderful she would be. i guess the joke is on me.

  20. @8?03pm: Don't be so sure that Adams will be mayor for 8 years. He's widely reported to be "in over his head" on several major items the mayor needs to be comfortable with, conversant with, and up-to-speed about.

He can delegate lots of things to others, but HE still has to UNDERSTAND the stuff he delegates; it's not clear yet if he can step into the role of mayor as easily as he seems to picture himself doing.

While I hope Adams will prove to be a good & effective mayor for ALL of us (b/c we need a mayor who gives an effective shit about this city!), I won't be entirely surprised if Adams's shortcomings (whatever they may be) trip him up in unexpected ways.

  21. @Anon 2:01 am -

If Adams is, indeed, over his head on several major items, that's a big, big, HUGE improvement over the current mayor.

  24. Aaanndd Adams "announces" he'll take his first couple paychecks in bitcoin, thus giving force to concerns that he loves to grandstand and can't prioritize correctly.

I'm now worried that Adams is Yang all over again. (And no, I didn't vote for either of those men.)

  25. If I said Rivera has done absolutely nothing for her community I would be overstating her effort.
