Bistro Marylou opening at 41 St. Mark's Place

In recent weeks, we've seen activity inside the restaurant space at 41 St. Mark's Place just east of Second Avenue. (Thanks to John Holmstrom for the top pic from Feb. 17.) 

And yesterday, opening-soon signage for the new establishment went up... a French bistro called Marylou... (thanks to Steven for this shot)...
The sign promises cocktails, small plates, brunch and good vibes. 

We don't know much else about the new venture at the moment. (Bistro Marylou has some teaser posts on Instagram.) 

The previous tenant, Paper Daisy, debuted in March 2019. The cafe-cocktail bar, from the owners behind East Village establishments Boulton & Watt, Drexler's and Mister Paradise, closed at the start of the PAUSE in March 2020 and never reopened. The storied Cafe Orlin closed here in October 2017, wrapping up a 36-year run on St. Mark's Place.

    Saw the work being done the other day said a prayer that these operators were going to be considerate and aware that they have neighbors who actually live here unlike the last group Paper Daisy who within a few months stopped the coffee service and installed Bar Illegal who were just horrendous awful neighbors with live bands loud music and a manager who became threatening when they were asked to stop so here's to Hoping that Marylou will be good neighbors and for the community because we could use a good french cafe since Jules closed

    Paper Daisy seemed awful and loud and had a strange menu. It was such a disappointment to lose Cafe Orlin to that. I am skeptical whenever I see small plates emphasized (unless it’s an izakaya); it does indeed sound like they want to push drinks rather than create an actual attractive cafe. There are so few places besides Veselka where we can enjoy good, reasonably priced food in a welcoming environment late night. Is it because the rents are too high that we have only drinking places, take out and really expensive places and so few diners and bistros and cafes?

    Welcome to Marylout, happy to see this space filled although I will always miss Cafe Orlin. Now how about more coffee shops with space to sit? And some diners?
