What was up with that plane today?

We received several queries late this morning about a low-flying airplane over the neighborhood (see screengrab of a Twitter DM above)... we were away at the time, and never heard anything else about it... perhaps you did?

  1. Yes, I heard the plane also. Didn't know what it could be. Usually, it is a police action, but maybe not this time. Does anyone know?

  2. I only heard the helicopter that was flying around in the middle of the night last night around 1:00 am

  3. I’m a private pilot living in the EV. This airspace is controlled, so unless they were totally rogue (unlikely) they would have been cleared for that activity by LaGuardia tower, who owns the airspace essentially from the ground up to 7,000ft in this area. There may be tower audio archived somewhere; I’d check liveATC, but it’d likely be hard for a non pilot to decipher. My guess is that they were doing photography or some other aerial reconnaissance and were cleared to do so.

  4. FWIW, there was this stort about a small plane making an emergency landong in Connecticut on March 2, which may or may not be related... https://connecticut.news12.com/police-small-plane-makes-emergency-landing-at-seaside-park-in-bridgeport

  5. I complained about that plane yesterday as it was loud and kept circling over my block for an extended period of time. Thought it was odd to see a small aircraft and not a helicopter. I've seen small planes fly over the harbor, but never circle around over the city like that.

  6. I would guess that if it’s a seaplane then perhaps a large vessel was in the water and they circled around until it was clear?
