You can't compare this to Coachella, which had three full days of music over two weekends with crowds in excess of 750,000 people.
ReplyDeleteSaturday was 4 hours of music with maybe 1,000 people at its peak, and that's a stretch because a lot of people were walking through and stopped for a few minutes and then kept walking.

DeleteThis is 2:05 PM. I am looking at EV Grieve pictures from the mosh pit crowd for this concert, hundreds of people packed together, screaming (yes, they were having a great time) they were not people who "were walking through and stopped for a few minutes and then kept walking."
ReplyDeleteI live a block away from Tompkins and was walking to work when this was happening. Insane amount of humans convening together so closely. Loud, jarring music. So not my scene! It seems people are over COVID and wish to resume their normal, chaotic lives. Is the pandemic finished? Did I not read or hear the news alert to just carry on as if it the past two years didn't take place? I'd rather visit my dentist than attend an event such as this. But whatever floats your boat. I guess all of the people in these photos are having the time of their lives without a care in the world. As someone who is vaccinated and boosted with a compromised immune system, this scene scared the living day lights out of me. I wonder if this will be an occurring thing every Saturday.

ReplyDeleteNah, last year's show was outrageously irresponsible. Nowadays you have crowds of thousands standing or seating next to each other for 3 hours in every show venue in the city every night.

ReplyDeletePeople realize there are tents of thousands at baseball games and concerts at msg? Times Sq is getting busy again. This was a small outdoor crowd enjoying live music. How is this an issue? Perhaps some need therapy to overcome their trauma from covid? Life goes on.

ReplyDeleteThe April 23, 2022 rally and concert was organized as a response to an outrageous media smear campaign fueled by false information supplied by the mayor's office and parks dept, both of which were publicly embarrassed by "tweets" from a sleazy politician who has an office at the SE corner of 7th Street and Avenue B, who accused our April 24, 2021 rally of being a "super spreader" event.
Taking the sleazy politician's lead, the mayor's office and parks dept provided media outlets with altered documentation and a phony story that we had "falsely" applied for a "September 11 Memorial." IN APRIL.
In an attempt to gain as much political mileage as he could, while ignoring REAL issues that affect his constituents, such as increased gentrification by way of "up-zoning" which he SUPPORTS, the sleazy politician gave media interviews that repeated the city's and parks dept's LIES, including his claim that we had "no permits of any kind" - when I sent him PROOF of the permits that show NO "September 11 Memorial" (HOW THE HELL can ANYone hold an event in ANY New York City park without permits, Harvey????) he refused to retract his public statements. He also DENIED having lied to the media about us and about our event - when I referred him to his archived interview on WBAI.org, he REFUSED to acknowledge or admit his falsehoods.
As a result of the sleazy politician's statements, the mayor and parks commissioner cancelled our upcoming events for 2021 in Tompkins Square Park that had already been APPROVED by the parks dept. When the mayor and parks dept refused to budge, we were forced to sue them and their people in federal court in order to restore the status quo, spending about $10,000 in the process.
Thanks a lot, Harvey! In all the time he was in office, your corrupt-as-hell predecessor Sheldon Silver never messed with our shows, nor did fascist mayor Rudolph Giuliani, who hated us as much as we hated him. But you and then-mayor DeBlasio had NO problem attempting to crush us. You both FAILED.
So, as a result of our successful fight against violations of our civil rights by politicians that hide behind liberal facades, we will be hosting the SAME rally EVERY year at the end of April in our beloved Tompkins Square Park.
As we have shouted loudly since the 1980s: "WHOSE FUCKING PARK? OUR FUCKING PARK!!!!"
