Root & Bone shutters after 8 years in the East Village

Root & Bone closed after brunch service on Sunday... bringing an end to eight years at 200 E. Third St. just west of Avenue B.

Per an Instagram post
After 8 years in the East Village, we have made the incredibly difficult and heartbreaking decision to close our doors. ... We are so grateful for all the wonderful people that have joined us, the friends we have made, and the family we have forged with our amazing, funny, and weird staff.
"Top Chef" veterans Janine Booth and Jeff McInnis opened the restaurant specializing in Southern cuisine in early 2014... they later expanded the brand, with a pop-up in Puerto Rico and an outpost in South Miami in 2019. That location remains open... as does their Stiltsville Fish Bar in Miami Beach.

This EV address was previously home to Mama's Food Shop, which closed in July 2012 after 15 years. Heart 'n Soul tried the space briefly before Root & Bone.

  3. That is too bad they had great fried chicken.

  4. After the great Mama's closed, this space was dead to me. (And the patrons always looked annoying.) How much you wanna bet that they'll leave without removing the outdoor shed, the most notorious rat haven in the EV.

  5. This is super sad, they had great fried chicken and the biscuits couldn't be beat. They will be missed!

    1. Not that affordable fried chicken. Plus we still have Bobwhite around the corner.

  6. Crazy to revisit the Mama's-closing post, and the lamenting of the loss of community... from ten years ago!!! Meanwhile the afforementioned problem has only gotten worse IMO.

  7. Hilarious addition to the recent news article about how NYC neighborhoods are booming. Did those writers even look at the neighborhoods outside of the weekend? Even then look around. The streets are dead in the East Village.

  8. I agree with Glenn, I looooved Mama’s! Even though I lived just around the corner I never payed no mind to the subsequent businesses

  9. The streets are dead outside of the weekends? Not in my experience. Leave it to the EVGrumps -- they complain the streets are too crowded one day, and that they're too empty the next!

  10. The rats under that shed ruined the garden next to it. get that shed out.

  11. Root & Bone was a great spot! Not only was their food delicious (the short rib meat loaf was incredible) - they had such friendly staff. The Manager David was SOOO nice!!! I see comments on here about rats in the neighborhood and restaurant outdoor seating taking up parking spots. ...what about great food and keeping your fellow New Yorkers employed?! Root & Bone will be missed. Some of you posters are heartless

  12. I don't know about you MrNiceGuy but compared to prepandemic the people have not returned to the East Village. There are more than during the pandemic but a large portion has moved out of Manhattan as REBNY raises rent prices back up to prepandemic numbers and inflation eats every middle class worker's income. Look at how the neighborhood has changed, how many long running and new businesses went under in the last two years? Have you tried to recreate outside of walking around this area? The removal of East River Park has left Lower Manhattan with the south and west side for recreational activity, but those areas are also heavily touristy and make recreation a pain. This has nothing to do with labeling people as EVGrumps and everything to do with EVGrieving about how the changes of the last two years has trashed our neighborhood for the worse in my opinion.

  13. Sad to see a biz close, but living on this block I heartily agree that Shed needs to go. Near dusk that stretch is like the Rat olympics with them rushing back and forth between the shed and restaurant.

  14. This place went down hill, even before the pandemic. They got lazy and rude. Nothing beats Mama’s. And Bob White’s is better for those that remember.

  15. The food was great and I only ever felt good energy when I ate at Root & Bone. Posts about rats and Mama's and other idiotic comments. What's that all about?! I've lived in this neighborhood for 11 years. Covid brought outdoor sheds. They're at every restaurant. Deal with it. Also, there were always rats in that rat garden - it's always been an unkempt mess. Mama's was great but in it's own way, so was Root. I'll say this... Root was a quality place and we're sad to see it go. -Nick

  17. Mama’s was the best-I would get three meals out of an order of Mac and cheese, carrots and beets and Brussels sprouts!
