Farewell to the rat-infested tree pit of 5th Street

Workers tore up part of the sidewalk and the tree pit on Fifth Street just east of Avenue A along the Con Ed substation here...
Workers cut down the tree in recent months (last fall?). Not sure about the condition of the tree, but the roots had caused the concrete to lift. 

And anyone walking here at night likely saw the large rat population. We've spotted up to a dozen rats darting back and forth between the holes in the tree pit and underneath the fencing on the Con Ed building.

    Well, not sure this will take care of the rats, but it’s worth a try. That’s the worst block for rats in the EV. I parked there for a weekend and they moved into the engine compartment, chewed everything up, $4,000 in damage and two weeks in the shop. Insurance covered all but the $100 deductible, so if you wonder why your rates keep going up, here’s part of the answer.

    Same thing is happening on E 3RD ST. Tons of little rats living in and running back and forth from a huge stump the city just left, instead of removing and putting a new tree.

    Report your complaints to 311 online or on phone. Otherwise it's just going to get worse

    Try the intersection of Charles St and Greenwich Ave in W Village around 3am when the garbage is put out. HUNDREDS of rats, gnawing on the plastic bags full of rat dinner.
