Caturday's news: 'Bad Pussies' mural tagged on 3rd Street

In the last day or two someone tagged (defaced?) the "Bad Pussies" mural on Third Street at Avenue B... The mural has been here since at least 2007 (the earlier Google Street View goes back) ... and some previous EVG coverage here.

This is so sad. These asshole taggers are moving on from destroying property to destroying art and property. It would be so nice if we could stop this crap.

Saw some ass-hat where I live on 11th bombing under the Michael Jackson mural early one morning. Stupid meaningless bubble letters and not even discernable. Then, after gathering his paint can, whips out his phone to take a photo and has this expression of pride, so I ask him, what are you so proud about? That's not art, it's vandalism. He disagrees. Meanwhile, this person looked to be in his forties. The rise of the individual (and his/her/their) opinions and need for expression is OUT OF CONTROL thanks to mobile tech; the popularity of which has completely thrown the idea of COMMUNITY under the bus. I'm devastated. And now NYers don't really speak to each other on the street. Serendipity is no more. And community is what counts, what we more need because the idea of community leads to respect: respecting people, respecting opinions that are different from your own, and respecting public and private property. Do we realize all we have lost?

Re: anon 7:42pm. I sure hope you took their picture. I’ve found the NYPD does sometimes take this seriously. I’ve reported and caught two people spray painting buildings in the past few years.

"...taggers are moving on from destroying property to destroying art." Graffiti isn't art, it's tagging.

Taggers and muralists at war? Muralists paint over taggers when they create their art. Taggers come by and paint their own art over the murals. All depends on what side of the wall you are standing on. But the difference here, most of the time, is that the muralists had the permission of and support of the building owner and probably the community as well. Taggers, "graffiti artists", are vandals that deface private and/or public property, with their initals or nicknames...their "tags" which are generally childish in their lack of any real artistic inspiration or talent.

Woof. I’ve never liked this mural and now it looks even worse with some ding-dong’s generic tagging on top.
