The UPS store recently closed, around the corner, on the 14th st. side of this building.

ReplyDeleteWell that sucks, it was a great spot to sit, relax and have a snack after having some medical stuff done at Mt. Sinai next door.
ReplyDeleteSeveral of the smaller spaces in that building have closed in recent months, despite all signs of their having been busy and successful businesses. I wonder if it has anything to do with the Target that will be occupying the former Food Emporium space? Perhaps the landlord isn't allowing renewal of leases if they're going to be incorporated into the footprint of the new Target, or if they're hoping to consolidate them into an accompanying single store that could take advantage of the frontage on well-traveled Union Square.

A staff said they have plans to reopen between 11th & 12th street at University Place in November. It’ll be a smaller store and less convenient but I hope it’s true!!

I was just in there on Sunday getting a drink as a member of the sip club.Highly dissapointed and saddened as I recently moved in the area and the convenience of being able to walk to.this location was pleasing.I’m thinking of canceling my subscription because of the inconvenience having to take mass transit now to get my favorite food and drink items. This SUCKS!!!😠ðŸ˜
ReplyDeleteI was thinking "good riddance" to a mediocre national chain in our neighborhood with plenty of interesting & independent places for a soup, sandwich or coffee. I'm surprised to see some nostalgic "aww, I'll miss Panera Bread" vibe comments from this typically very tough group of EVG-reading/commenting customers. Serious question: what do people like to get there that I may have been missing??

DeleteThe Sunburst Espresso Bar, one of those independent places for soup, sandwiches or coffee, recently closed on 18th Street and 3rd Avenue after 28 years in biz.

The "interesting & independent places for a soup, sandwich or coffee" are not in the immediate vicinity of a large medical building utilized by thousands of people a day, many of whom are elderly and / or have limited mobility, and who appreciated the range of offerings, not wildly overpriced, that Panera offered. Also, the Asiago cheese bread, when toasted and slathered with butter and drunk with a big cup of English Breakfast tea with sugar and milk was a treat not to be missed.

As for Panera, I was a member of the Unlimited Sip Club, and so it was a convenient place to pick up lemonade/tea/coffee! Very disappointing!
There is a new cafe on 16th & Third called CupSoul. I haven't tried it yet don't know how it compares to Sunburst.
