1 guess on what is coming to this empty storefront on Avenue A and 13th Street

Activity, including the installation of glass cigar cases, continues inside the storefront on the SE corner of Avenue A and 13th Street... a worker on the scene said it will be a — SMOKE SHOP.

The business is expected to be open in the next few weeks. Until then, you can try one of the other two dozen smoke shops in the neighborhood.

Back in May, the owners of Keybar on 13th Street between Avenue A and First Avenue were looking to relocate here, but the application didn't make it past Community Board 3.

Caffè Bene closed here in December after nearly six years in business... until 2014, the space was Kim's Laundromat & Cleaners for some 30 years.

Thank you to EVG reader Erika for the photo and tip!

What smoke shop needs such a big space, that must come with a hefty rent bill?

The neighborhood needs another smoke shop/deli like it needs a hole in the head, but 100% better than another bar.

Disagree with dwg. Would much rather have a bar in that space than a soulless smoke shop.

of all the types of stores we have in this neighborhood, i'm dumbfounded by how many head shops there are and continue to open. how often do people need to buy new bongs?

How long before these blights on the streetscape start to close? Can't be too soon for me.

Aside from the insanity of preferring a smoke shop over a low-key bar, it should be noted that Keybar is a known quantity and is actually relocating from a midblock location to an avenue corner, which is better siting & doesn't add "one more bar" to the area because it's a bar we already have just moving down the block. But instead of letting them take a space, the community board rejected it and now it's going to be something lesser. Meanwhile Keybar is still searching for a space. What is the point of all of that in the end?

If you want every EXISTING bar in the neighborhood to go away, just say so, and accept the consequences of your radical position. Just know that individually nitpicking every bar and allowing exceptions for none doesn't hide this kind of position in the least. And clearly you'd be in a minority of people with your vision of the East Village as a bar-free zone.

I miss the laundromat.

have no fear 3:31 this is a laundromat just not for clothing and such,
I'm all for bars and recreation in the hood but man i do not understand the CB3/SLA committee they fawn over bro/party bar owners and deceptive operators and pass over community based establishments who want to serve booze
Sometimes I wonder if any of the SLA committee even live in the area some of the more recently opened places (post pandemic) are just the worst offenders booming bass indoors and blasting speakers outdoors and zero and i mean nothing gets done to reign these bars restaurants in, They've disrupted streets that have been normal nyc quiet blocks for decades and decades
the whole lot of them need to wake up to the residents who live here needs quiet evenings and nights no puke or poo piss woo etc or step down

How about an old fashioned 24 hour Greek style DINER? Man I miss those places. No overpriced Vaselka is not the same.

Do Community Boards have any power to regulate smoke shops? Who licenses them and why do we have to have so many?

I second that!!!

Maybe I am in the minority here, but I'm pretty excited for this. My room-mate and I have been forced to walk almost 175 feet to the smoke shop on the next block since the last one closed, and its been pretty brutal. COVID was rough and so many stores closed, it's nice to finally have some of the conveniences of city life return finally. Good work Mayor Adams!
