I live right upstairs from where this happened, and can confirm that someone was indeed hit, and that it occurred at right about 7 this morning. I also spoke to the victim's husband earlier today, who told me both that the injuries his wife sustained were thankfully minor, and that the NYPD let the driver leave the scene, even though he was driving without a license. According to him, they are weighing whether or not to proceed with charges. The car is still on Clinton Street.
ReplyDeleteImagine if this man's car drove into pedestrians or a dining shed with customers.
ReplyDeleteI cycle in this bike like often and with all the traffic coming off the bridge, there should honestly be jersey barriers to protect the bike lane and pedestrians on the sidewalk
ReplyDeleteThis section of Clinton is such a traffic sewer, and as evidenced by this, super dangerous for anyone in the bike lane. They should ban the right turn from Delancey. Use the much more appropriately sized Essex to head north instead.
ReplyDeleteYes, this street should be closed and opened as an Open Street. Too narrow for all the bridge traffic.
ReplyDeleteEssex or First should be the options.
Clinton St is a death trap for bikes and cars. Way to narrow w/ all the dining sheds. CLOSE THE STREET!
ReplyDeleteI walk this street every day and it's a tight mess. The street is too narrow for sidewalk dining sheds, cars, and bikes. The sidewalks aren't any better because of the additional sidewalk tables and garbage bags everywhere. They should reconfigure it as an open street with a lane for delivery trucks.
ReplyDeleteAlso, that ambiguous open... tar field on the corner of Clinton and I think Delancey is another area cars run wild. I was feet away from being mowed down by a speeding Lexus SUV a couple of weeks ago.
And there's a daycare across the street from where this happened! Those kids walk down this street to the park every day. I can't even imagine how the driver picked up enough speed on this narrow street to lose control and knock down this lamppost. So sick of these careless and dangerous drivers!
