Hey, what might be opening in this empty 1st Avenue storefront?

Coming soon signage is up for a SMOKE SHOP at 213 First Ave. between 12th Street and 13th Street. (Thanks to Pinch for the pic!)

OK, what else is there to say?

The smoke shop is taking over the storefront from Coddiwomple, the sandwich shop that opened and closed after a few weeks in business earlier this year.

Please Please please, not the routine comments...

Businesses traditionally open where the population frequents the most- I guess we smoke a lot and purchase unnecessary things.

Whatever the market will bear. The East Village is becoming a 2 note neighborhood- smoke shops and bars.

Without passing a value judgment one way or another, it's pretty funny to me that we have such insanely punitive regulations regarding alcohol (can't so much as have a drink on your own stoop, strict rules about liquor stores, opening hours, etc.) and yet have opened the doors to a seemingly infinite number of smoke shops with zero regulation about where you can or can't smoke. The alcohol model is a not a good one, but this seems like an obvious policy oversight.

I tried one- it was no Foxface. That is the best sandwich in the world. I can’t wait for their opening on Ave A
