What happens if they do enjoy hell? Wouldn't that be kind of a disappointment?

ReplyDeleteThere have been a few robberies over the past couple of years during the holidays from the ground floor of my walk up apartment building here in alphabet city. My landlord always assures us as tenants that he is on top of it and will install cameras ASAP. Total BS. Nothing happens. He is a cheapskate like countless others. So frustrating. I feel bad for the tenants of this building, especially at a time like this :(

ReplyDeleteIt seems a lot of people think cameras are a solution - they are not. You would have a video of a person stealing packages, which would lead to nothing (unless it is a tenant in the building stealing and is identifiable). This would potentially be resolved if Amazon (and other online retailers) cared if your package was stolen - they don't. Does anybody remember when if the package recipient was not home the delivery service (UPS, FedEX etc...) would leave a tag and instruct you to pick it up? Wasn't so long ago that this was how delivery worked... now none of the entities you are paying to bring you merchandise really care if you get it (but they will take a picture of it in your lobby as proof it was delivered) - they just want to empty their trucks. A simple solution is to shop locally and stop getting everything shipped to your building, maybe even have a human interaction for a change? I won't even attempt to get into the "did you really need that?" question.

DeleteA solution that’s been successful in our building is that we deliver each others packages whenever we see them. No packages in the lobby means no stealing if packages.
ReplyDeleteFed Ex takes photos of my packages and says it was delivered. More often than not it is a photo of the package in a lobby other than my own. This has happened to me so many times. Have brought this to their attention and have had the issue escalated. Then it happens again. Use UPS. They are reliable. Additionally, Anon 12:12 above is correct about cameras. Sadly tenants in my building have also found delivery people going through the packages in the lobby. Only safe way to get packages is paying extra to require a signature, but actually not that safe because they will still drop it in the lobby without a signature.

ReplyDeleteTens of thousands of packages disappear daily in NYC, according to an article in the NY Times some years ago. Never have anything of sentimental value mailed, because no amount of money will replace the loss. Every week there are packages in the lobby of my building which belong to another building, and many of these have been scanned as "delivered" and the recipients think they are stolen, when in reality they rot in another lobby, unless somebody takes care of them... The best bet is to pick up directly from the delivery points from the different delivery companies. You can find that information online...
ReplyDeleteHere's a foolproof solution. Shop in STORES and support your local economy. Crazy, I know! Use your freakin legs and walk to the store. Stop ordering amazon, uber, seamless. Stop ordering people and things around! Its horrible for the economy and workers rights. All those companies treat their workers like trash.This is NYC FFS you can literally buy anything here. Get UP and use your LEGS and FEET to walk to the goddamn store!
ReplyDeleteI shop locally but there are many things I need to buy online either because those shops no longer exist here or its medical supplies that I need delivered.
ReplyDeleteFedEx and USPS have always been reliable, but UPS is absolutely awful. They lie about making the delivery, never attempting to deliver despite me being home. Their customer service is also awful. Thankfully, there is now a UPS store near me where I can go to fill out the paperwork to correct the problem with every package, but why should I have to do that? I'll be making that trip today since UPS delivered me an open, empty box last week. I'm assuming the contents of that box are dumped all over the inside of their truck. It wasn't even anything anyone else would want or could sell.
We have a camera in our building that caught thieves a couple of years ago, but the super decided not to hand it over to the police, so it was useless. The thieves were not deterred by the cameras or the signs stating there were cameras.
