Reconstruction of the Tompkins Square Park field house expected to start next month

Reconstruction of the Tompkins Square Park field house is expected to start next month...
... according to the just-updated Parks website...
According to a Parks presentation (PDF here) to Community Board 3 in March 2020, the goals are to:

• Upgrade existing restrooms to code.
• Upgrade Parks and maintenance and operations space.
• Add First Aid, Lifeguard locker room spaces in the building.
• Reconstruct interiors.
• Clean and partially repoint exterior brick
• New windows and doors
• New utilities, including oil-to-gas conversion
Work is expected to last 18 months, with a projected reopening date of September 2024. This also means that the Tompkins Square mini pool will be closed for two consecutive summers.

Meanwhile, the public restrooms have been closed in Tompkins Square Park since early NovemberParks officials have said that a malfunctioning boiler and a broken pipe in the basement of the Park's field house are to blame for the closure.

With the renovations looming, some residents figured the city wouldn't make any temporary restroom repairs here. And they were right.

It doesn’t mention where the needle exchange will be located.

How on earth is this an 18 month project and why the F aren't they upgrading it further like the building in Washington Square?!

Why aren't they also replacing the grass? That park really needs some TLC.

The field house has mostly been locked for the past 2 weeks with workers (if you can find any) being dropped off at the park for a few hours. This doesn’t bode well for security in the park for the next 18-24 months to have no staff stationed there to keep an eye on things

It’s Garrett from the dog park. I’m meeting with Harvey & NYC Parks next week to see if we can get the main lawn re-seeded. It used to happen every spring but hasn’t happened for the past several years since Tompkins lost its full time gardener

To people who asked... I'll have an update on the ballfields/TF renovation tomorrow...

This is like that newspaper game where you look at two pictures and try to figure out what has changed

@Garrett thank you for bringing up the lawn for re-seeding! Great idea; - Cara (also from the dog park)

So no pool next summer?

why do they need to close the pool? there's an entrance just east of the fieldhouse that they could use. it's so good for the little ones, especially if they can't open the wading pool at Dry Docks this summer, (or even keep the entire big pool open).
