An EVG reader shared these photos Monday night from the Christodora House on Avenue B, which overlooks Tompkins.... providing an aerial view of the darkness ...
This happened in the summer, too... with the lights staying off for multiple nights. According to Parks employees at the time, the timer on the lights was set incorrectly. They were supposed to come on at 7 p.m.; instead, they switched on at 7 a.m. and off at 7 p.m.No word on what the problem is this time. Several residents said they contacted 311.
Per one reader: "So ridiculously unsafe."
Last night, a reader reported that the lights were working along the east side of the Park... but remained off around the main lawn and in the areas under construction...
The lights are on throughout the day. Our taxes at work
ReplyDeleteI walked into Tompkins Square Park Monday evening, and I wondered why all the lights were out. It was pitch black inside of the park and only a few people were brave enough to walk in the interior. I saw a couple of people who were at the chess tables playing musical instruments.

ReplyDeleteAnd for some reason the little park outside the F train has had the gates locked, which eliminates a shortcut. That is a public park, not the kiosks property!
ReplyDeleteI really like the lights out and wish it was a planned once a week thing. Usually much too much light pollution to see the evening colors and the quiet with the lights out is epic.
ReplyDeleteReally scary dangerous? I'd dispute that but your fears may vary. It does hinder nighttime basketball.
Note to self. Don't walk in the park after sunset!
ReplyDeleteI was about to call 311 to find out why the lights were on all day once again for weeks. I am just amazed how poorly the park is maintained, nothing has changed since I moved here 30 years ago, just look at the litter acid eaten dirty surface that people have to walk on, even the dog run is smoother to walk on
ReplyDeleteLights are still 50% off. The west side is even sketchier than normal (and that’s saying something…)
ReplyDeletenothing to do with the "lights out" campaign then for migrating birds?
ReplyDeleteStill off tonight!
