The city gave tenants a short time on Nov. 28 to vacate the premises. The Red Cross put tenants up in a Chinatown hotel just through Dec. 3. We've heard from tenants staying with friends... and we understand others are now in shelters. (Read about the Dawod-Hemeida family here.)
With the support of elected officials and the Cooper Square Committee, the tenants will be asking for temporary housing until they are allowed back into their homes.
Today's rally starts at 12:30 p.m. outside 642 E. 14th St. near Avenue C.
And the photos below are from Sunday... showing the now-vacant building ... and the pit next door...
First on EV Grieve:
Imagine having a job and a home to live in for which you pay for, only to be informed that one must vacate their premises with all of their belongings within days for a prolonged, indefinite period of time. There should be monetary compensation and/or placement into short term, safe housing nearby for all tenants, fully afforded of course by the property company who spearheaded this real estate project in the first place. This is absolute madness. How is this legally above board? So messed up!
ReplyDeleteWhatever you do don't give up don't back down don't give in and don't accept any offer other than you're moving back into your apartment end of story
Deleteonce again ----the mayor's 'CITY OF YES'...... COY ain't it??!!
ReplyDeletemadison realty does NOT have a good track record when it comes to safety & displacement.
Hopefully they get restitution!!!
ReplyDeleteOLIGARCHS ~have Adams in their back pocket and the only thing we can do is continue to stand strong and not accept the buyout unless it's $100,000 otherwise remain strong keep your lease and your key attached to your desire to live happy joyous and free within the community you love and support
ReplyDeleteIs there a stop work order until they fix the problem?
ReplyDeleteSo far yes.
Deletethank you for sharing 🙏
ReplyDeleteI am so saddened by this. The poor tenants. I can't believe the developer got the green light to go ahead with this project. There should be a settlement, but those take ages. Please donate via Go Fund Me if you can to help the dislocated tenants.
ReplyDeleteHow is it that the City is providing free hotel to migrants - but won’t guarantee free hotel to these NYC residents forced from their homes?
ReplyDeleteAnd especially as the City ignored concerns about the construction impact.
Unacceptable.
