High-end East Village sushi favorite Cagen has closed on 9th Street

After 10 years on Ninth Street between Avenue A and First Avenue, the well-regarded omakase spot Cagen has closed.

Chef-owner Toshio Tomita, who previously worked at Nobu, opened the kappo ryori-style restaurant in the subterranean space at No. 414 in 2013.

An Instagram post earlier in December (about the same time the space hit the rental market) noted that they'd be moving on to their next phase...

  1. This one hit hard. What a delightful, peaceful space serving high-end yet not break-the-bank expensive sushi. Guess the greedy landlords need to get theirs though, so was probably some ridiculous lease hike so that a non-contributing parasite can make their wallet just a little fatter while the space inevitably turns into an obnoxious TikTok-bait restaurant or just sits empty years.

    1. For $150 per person, the landlord would feel he could hike the rent.

  3. I had a second date here with my boyfriend in 2021. Such a beautiful atmosphere with delicious cuisine and warm service. We are both EV residents and adored this place. This news is terrible. Why do all the good restaurants close???
