Details!
Our parade begins at noon from El Sol Brillante, 522 E.12th St., between Avenue A and Avenue B. It will feature our Tree Goddess, Batalá, Stiltwalkers, and more. The parade will travel east on 12th Street, south on Avenue C, west on Sixth Street, north on Avenue A, enter Tompkins Square Park at Seventh Street, and end on Avenue B and Ninth Street.
Several EV community gardens will host events throughout the afternoon, from workshops to live performances. Check this link for a schedule to date.
The Spring Awakening coincides with the 2024 debut of activities on the Loisaida Open Streets, where a slate of events is held throughout the day on Avenue B between Eighth Street and 10th Street. This is part of the citywide Car-Free Earth Day.
Always incredible that DOT bills Earth Day Open Streets as “car-free” event - but does not bother to mention that bus riders will be impacted.
ReplyDeletePeople are paying for and entitled to essential mass transit - but bus riders treated as third class .
The City keeps wrecking MTA bus access as streets are continually closed for “events”
There's no bus route on Avenue B
DeletePony rides! Yippie
ReplyDeleteLove LUNGS spring awakening!
ReplyDeleteYeah

ReplyDeleteIt is a general comment about the City - not Avenue B specifically.
Also while they enjoy "no vehicles" on the street, folks will still be ordering their e-commerce deliveries which some low-paid worker will need to schlep....
Amazing these gardens exist and haven't been taken over by real estate developers.
ReplyDeleteThe Earth Day Open Streets program takes place in all five boro's and does affect bus routes but not extremely, just minor reroutes and possibly an extra block or two to walk. This is only between 10am and 4pm.
ReplyDeleteIt's so weird that the DOT after pandemic became so involved with like, entertainment, instead of just getting roads fixed and keeping traffic flowing, it's mad annoying. I don't mind the earth day thing it's cute, but they need to stfu about "open streets" that causes congestion and only helps some random bars and go back to being the DOT.
ReplyDeleteI am shocked that they close st marks during the warmer seasons for restaurants. The M8 bus runs through there and crosses a major artery 1st Ave and M15 bus. They could stop at 1st but they don’t. WTF MTA. Oftentimes people taking the bus have less mobility and need to
DeleteBe closer to their destination so they take the bus instead of the subway and you’re going to skip 1st avenue!?
I have tried to enjoy st marks with my kid since it’s a closed off street but there are bikes zooming down it so it’s not safe for pedestrians to linger.
This is always such a nice event each year. The EVGrumps will complain about literally anything, don't let them get you down!
ReplyDeleteCar free days seem to be the only days that people are concerned about bus routes and bike delivery people. Maybe we should do a car free day every Saturday to make people aware about how important busses are?
ReplyDeleteWhen did this become a discussion about public transportation? This is a wonderful event put together my a local organization LUNGS who helps keep the gardens open.
ReplyDeleteThank you LUNGS for this and all your other events!
@9:08,
ReplyDeleteCity DOT determines street closures - and forces MTA bus detours.
City DOT runs open streets and restaurant street dining.
City DOT is also in charge of bus stops
